Refried black beans and Spanish rice would be my top choice (made from scratch). I also like red beans and rice. I've tried to make those from scratch, but I can't get them to turn out right, so I use Zatarain's.

red beans and rice with Zatarain's mix. I'm too inept to make it from scratch although the few times I've had it homemade it blew the mix out of the water (and it took all day - another factor).
Cook em in a crock pot... still all day, but unattended.

I've really gotten into Mujadara lately (Rice, lentils, Caramelized onions). It's dirt cheap, really tasty and apparently pretty good for you.

After 3 decades in the Southwest I don't even question refried beans and rice. Cajun beans/rice, even with good sausage, is meh at best. I won't eat Deep South(USA) cooking, generally speaking-too greasy, too starchy, too unhealthy, in general.

I don't really like beans, and I can't say that I've really heard of this as a meal...

That said, I will sometimes have bean sprouts and rice together in a stir fry, for what it's worth.

your SO says she'll cook you any rice you want as long as you get her a certain ST themed article of clothing . . .

I sort of don't get this poll. So, do people eat just beans and rice together? I mean, I will have them together in burritos and I use a side-order of beans to dip my chips in and eat the rice, but I can't say I've ever just mixed beans and rice together and eaten them like that. Seems...like not a complete meal. Anyway, the only kind of beans I like are refried, and I love Spanish rice, though here it's Mexican rice.

Try cooking up some Mexican/Spanish rice and some pinto beans. Mash the beans a bit, but keep most of them whole. They don't have to be "refried," but they're better hot.

Have them hot with fried eggs and some hot tortillas for breakfast. You can add sliced tomato and/or avocado on the side. If you use hot sauce, try a little sour cream or cottage cheese to cool things down.

My mother in law is from Mexico but has lived here in Fresno for decades. This is a typical breakfast when we visit. Very good tasting and pretty balanced with protein and starch, especially if you add the tomato and avocado (both being fruits, no veggies in the meal though).

This was exactly what I thought the first time I was introduced to them, and I still think it's bizarre. It's definitely a regional thing.

Eaten together, beans and rice make a complete protein. So paired, they're of greater nutritional value than if eaten separately. A cheap source of protein, and darn good however you cook them.

I make red beans and rice from scratch using a Paul Prudhomme recipe that I've tweaked over the years.

I like black beans and rice, too. Very hot. With habaneros.

Hoppin' John is good with greens.

I always scoop a cup or so of beans out of the pot at the end, whirl them in the food processor for a second, then add them back to the pot. It gives the beans a little more body.

Edited to add: Holdfast, I agree. Any way its spelled, dal, daal, or dahl, tarka dal is very good.

I am sure they are fine nutritionally, I just can't help but see both items as side dishes, usually sitting next to a giant burrito filled with more beans and rice.

Exactly. I wasn't concerned with the nutritional value. I just think it's weird (and also looks a bit like vomit).

So, if you're not going to eat them, can I have your refried beans? ;)

Years and years and years ago when I drank like a grad student, there were nights coming home from the bars where a green chili and refried beans with rice burrito from a Mexican fast-food place near my apartment was the only reason why I didn't vomit. (I wasn't concerned about the nutritional value then, either. ;))

Okay, then I have daal and rice. I used to fake stomachaches to get out of eating it when I was younger. Didn't work. :(

You don't like it? I love a good tarka dahl and rice.
My mom's really not that good at making it, and there it was, that little bowl of it at every meal. My family teases me now when I voluntarily take some because I seriously used to hate it so much.

Eventually my sister and I wised up, though. When my parents weren't looking I'd drink her glass of milk (she hated drinking milk) and she would finish my daal. Partners in crime!
