When you have rice and beans (and you know you do!) what style do you prefer? Do you have any special recipes?

Do you go for a mix like Vigo or Zatarains, or do you work from scratch?

I don't think I've ever had any of the above. We do lentils and rice, does that count? I always hated it growing up.

Lentils and rice would definitely count. I'm not sure how it didn't make the list, but then I didn't include Korean kongbap either. :)

Okay, then I have daal and rice. I used to fake stomachaches to get out of eating it when I was younger. Didn't work. :(

Went with the red beans and rice buit also like the back/rice. Only I like to keep them on the mild side.

My daddy is New Orleans born and raised, and while I love rice and beans prepared in many fashions, I'm always loyal to the proper Cajun recipe. Homemade, of course.

Spanish rice and refried beans. I also like red beans and rice but it's difficult to come by around here.

red beans and rice with Zatarain's mix. I'm too inept to make it from scratch although the few times I've had it homemade it blew the mix out of the water (and it took all day - another factor).

None of the above. Blech.

When we took our trip for Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans several years ago, all of our lunches were donated from various local places. And every frickin' meal was "beans and rice." They were trying to give us a "taste of New Orleans."

I sort of don't get this poll. So, do people eat just beans and rice together? I mean, I will have them together in burritos and I use a side-order of beans to dip my chips in and eat the rice, but I can't say I've ever just mixed beans and rice together and eaten them like that. Seems...like not a complete meal. Anyway, the only kind of beans I like are refried, and I love Spanish rice, though here it's Mexican rice.

It's transregional. :D

Apparently the western hemisphere picked it up from West Africans, as in the case of the American south's dish called Hoppin' John (rice and black-eyed peas) and most of the other dishes. Rice was commonly eaten with beans or lentils in Africa and the slaves reintroduced it. The crops and the dish did well in the new world, akin to beans and cornbread.
