Rian Johnson's Trilogy Is NOT Cancelled

If it happens? Awesome! I'd love to see what Johnson can do in the Star Wars universe when not confined to the saga films.
If it doesn't? That's fine too. I know nothing about what he has planned and therefore I have nothing truly to connect to.

It won't affect me one way or another if his trilogy gets made or not.

Pretty much this. It is amazing to me the connections people have built in their mind over a trilogy happening or not.

I haven't seen much of Rian Johnson's work, only TLJ and Knives Out. As much as I appreciated the attempt with TLJ to take risks and go in unconventional directions, I found that KO had a more satisfying narrative. If Johnson's trilogy is more along those lines, then it should be pretty solid.

Yes, I am aware that there is still chance this couldn't happen, but with so many people insisting there was absolutely no chance it was ever going to happen, I couldn't help but bring attention to the fact he's still planning on doing it at the moment.

I don't think he is actually even doing that. I think he just likes to sometimes pull it out to troll his haters because he thinks it's funny. He knows it will get attention so he can do it anytime he wants for a laugh. Jason

I found the ST depressing. Especially that everyone who is old had to die and be depressed.
I had preferred that we would have seen the rise of the new Republic and Jedi order.
Showing a different side of Star Wars where peace could be won and the force something that could actualyl heal a broken galaxy would have been too much work and probably demanded too much from viewers. The original trilogy worked for a lot of reasons, much of them due to the fact that nothing like it had been seen on the scale it was attempting, but part of it was optimism. It wasn't the star trek optimism of better living through cooperation and technology, but it was a belief in loyalty and friendship and redemption.

The sequel trilogy tried to copy some of those elements but it never quite succeeds:
TFA: Is a rehash of things that Abrams liked from the first trilogy. And it sets the stage for.. something. What it sets the stage for isn't particularly clear because Abrams hands the baton on to the next director without any real guidance. Lucas may not have had much of a plan but he was more or less consistent. It has its good points, but it doesn't get to capitalize on them. I might have liked it better if it had been set 200 years after ROTJ, with Luke, Han and Leia distant memories who lived their lives and passed on into myth. This poor fucking galaxy never got a minute's respite. Well.. it's not called Star Peace. Seriously, this is a really shitty galaxy. I can see why the ET species moved over to ours.

TLJ: I think I would have liked this as a standalone movie that had nothing to do with Star Wars, or as a standalone star wars movie that had nothing to do with any of the major arc characters. I've stated my reasons why I don't like it for what it is. I don't expect anyone to agree. Maybe Rian Johnson could do much better given complete control. But really enjoys taking a wrecking ball to myths, why bother with Star Wars? Part of Star War's appeal is also the hero's journey. Luke's was shown to be something of a failure here, as he ends up a book burning murderous ideal betraying crusty old asshole. And his student is just a tool, instead the placeholder for whatever hopes we'd had for the franchise until then. Thanks?

RoS: begins to feel by this point that Abrams, who has never displayed a single original idea in his noggin and has made a very comfortable living making competent rehashes out of the work of his betters, seems to be diving, again, (hi Ben!) into the Extended Universe that was nixed so he didn't have to be bound to it, and not the best parts. Like the TFA, it has good parts. I've yet to see an unwatchable Abrams film. I like most of them. And this is the best of the Second Trilogy, even if it feels like a quick Bondo repair job on the franchise after TLJ. Abrams, just give your third movies in trilogies to Justin Lin. Go with what works.

I went away and came back and I can't remember what my point was, and I don't think anyone is still reading, so I can get away with saying I only passed Algebra in 9th grade by stealing the grade book. Now I will add something about the force and Qui Gon so you will not notice that, but it feels good to finally mention it.

In short, and in conclusion, the entire Second Trilogy is a force dream of Abeloth. The end.

My 10th grade Geometry teacher let us copy out of the answer book on the final and write in her grade book.
my algebra teacher was a jerk who used to treat us like garbage. He once got furious when someone called his Toyota MR2 "Mister Two"
he had it coming. The MR2 was cool, though.

Yikes. Well, I never found algerbra to be that fun. Though that video in class about the history of algebra was perhaps the best part...and the only part I remember.

I'm just as sure the plan at the moment is still for it to happen. You have to keep in mind that there are at least vague plans for where the big franchises, like the MCU, DCEU, Star Trek, and Star Wars, are going to be going way after what they have announced so far. . I have a feeling most of them probably have at least some idea of where they are going to take thing at least up to 2030, or possibly even further. I'm sure Rian Johnson's trilogy is in there somewhere in the Star Wars plans.
I haven't watched or read a ton of behind the scenes stuff with Rian Johnson, but I find it hard to believe he's really that much of a complete and total asshole.

I think he got a rough deal with The Last Jedi. Disney's approach was baffling - "Hey, we've paid billions of dollars for this immensely popular, money making behemoth ... we're making a trilogy, right? Cool! Hey, should we plan the three movies out, or ... maybe we'll just wing it and make it up as we go? Okay, let's do that."

I'm all for giving him another shot - provided he's got the reigns from start to finish.

^^this

Abrams had his own story in mind with TFA, even in using templated aspects and beats from ANH as a springboard., If he had full control over his three then the mess of the ST would either be nonexistent, solely on him, or something else. (Noting that ROTJ had some articles turning Rian into a punching bag undeservedly...)

Rian's ideas were the most expansive and least rehashed of the ST, and I liked the notion of Luke going bad because it added some dimension to his character. Unfortunately, the execution is a bit off and some of that stems to the lack of backstory and some of it - too directly in some cases - was to "subvert expectations". The biggest is arguably the quest to find him and return the shiny lightsaber in the first one, they find him, it's a cliffhanger, and in comes the next installment and he promptly chucks it. That and most hermits don't leave detailed maps (sans one little square chunk of it that can also be easily extrapolated) and say "Come find me and give me some valium and a hickey."

The ST's biggest problem was having even less of a three-movie arc penciled in than the OT had. TLJ's release had numerous articles about the spiel, even some saying that Johnson had no way to win, given the nature of TFA and not just because it didn't or couldn't really fit in the gaps ideally between ROTJ and TFA... it sure did feel like a nice nostalgia rub, at least until the influences of ANH became "uninspired rehash" as audiences got closer to the end credits. TROS felt more need to actually fill in past details, at least where TLJ was concerned, since, among other things, it was more important to have Kylo recreate that mask that made people think they nicked it from the costume bin for "The Muppet Show" since it'd fit Gonzo The Great and his alluring nose perfectly.

Entertainment sites are reporting that Netflix has paid $450m for Johnson's next two Benoit Blanc movies. I'm guessing part of said deal was the understanding that he'll be working on those, and not a project for their biggest rival.

In other words, no one has to formally announce the RJ SW trilogy as not happening for it to, well, not happen.

There's still a pretty good chance they could happen. They've been saying since they were announced that he had other stuff he was going to work on before them, and this deal is just for the Benoit Blanc movies, not an exclusive deal for all of his future movies, so this doesn't rule out him moving on to the Star Wars trilogy after they're done.

No, no, no. One can literally only work on one announced project at any point in time. Its the way of things. Because the internet... is always right.

Right?

Guys? Guys. GUYS?!?

I was one who really enjoyed The Last Jedi and would be excited about what else Johnson could add to Star Wars. But like everything else, its all vaporware until I'm sitting in my seat at the theatre and the movie starts. I loved Knives Out and I'm excited to see further tales of Benoit Blanc. If we get those AND a Johnson-led Star Wars trilogy? AWESOME! If we only get the Benoit Blanc movies, I'm cool with that too.
