Rian Johnson trilogy canceled

They were referenced by the piece's author, not by Kennedy, as being "potential films" in development. That's not proof of them being canceled or not, but it's hardly a ringing endorsement...

Do you think that Lucasfilm's publicity department didn't get their hands on the article? With as much scrutiny as they're under these days, it would make more sense for them to eliminate any reference to future projects if one of the two remaining weren't still in development than to leave them in when one wasn't in development. What you omit from your statement is that they reference Kevin Fiege, the savior-apparent from some sourc-- oh, let's just quote the article exactly:

In October, two weeks before Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss pulled out of a year-old deal to develop a new Star Wars trilogy, Kennedy called Rolling Stone to discuss December 20th’s Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, and a post-Skywalker-saga cinematic future for the franchise that remains wide open, even as Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and Marvel’s Kevin Feige develop potential films.

So, if you're going to suggest a "hardly ringing endorsement" for Johnson, you'd better do it for Feige too.

I'm pretty sure you meant to say virtue signalling, as I can't even figure out what virtual signalling could possibly be. A type of signalling which doesn't in fact involve a signal?

Regardless, I still disagree with you in full.
And virtue signaling, like he failed to correctly reference, doesn’t really exist. It’s a concept invented by those who lack empathy and understanding of people who aren’t like them. They are so incapable of understanding that others do genuinely feel compassion for others that they assume it is some cynical attempt at looking better than them. It’s a major red flag that they just can’t stop waving.

Okay. I think it's fair to suggest that a trilogy officially announced two years ago ought to be further along in development than a movie announced two months ago, but, if it makes you happy, I'll concede the point: no ringing endorsement for either project.

Rian Johnson wrote and directed another film after The Last Jedi. It’s called Knives Out. It comes out a week from today. And frankly, I’d want a break from Star Wars before embarking on a new trilogy. Because that’s a big commitment. Still... We don’t know the specifics of his contract but I would imagine it has a drop dead date and allows for a project or two to be made in that time. We also don’t know how far along Johnson is with his idea. We also don’t know how far Feige is with his idea.

This is a difficult time for the Star Wars production. The idea of moving past the Skywalker Saga has to be one with a lot of conversations about what this is going to look like now. So yeah, this development process is going to take time. And frankly, I don’t envy a single one of them because no matter what they do, some part of fandom is going to hate it.

Because 24 months > 2 months. And Feige has been just as busy as Rian Johnson lately...

Firing directors left and right does tend to complicate things, yes. ;)

Oh?

Stop the smug attitude and word twisting.
So you're saying firing directors left and right makes things easier, darling? ;)

I don't have a dog in all this - if RJ makes another SW movie, I'll approach it with an open mind. After all, Disney won't be gambling with my money.

Methinks that TPTB at Disney will not greenlight another SW film until after Episode IX's international take exceeds expectations.
That seems reasonable, especially since The Mandalorian seems to have found a great place for itself on Disney+.

Knives Out
I'm interested to see how it does. I'm still uncommitted about seeing it in the theater (that's the story with a lot of films these days), but I will definitely see it eventually.

I'll be there (in the theater) for Frozen II and The Rise of Skywalker, though, for sure; the last two movies I saw in the theater were Dark Fate and Doctor Sleep.

I didn’t say that. But it’s also not what I was discussing. I was suggesting going forward that finding a future for this franchise is an unenviable task, and you know that’s what I meant. You chose to twist my words to follow your narrative. No, I can’t deny that there have been issues behind the scenes. But it’s pointless to focus on the past. What’s done is done. At the moment, we have potential Star Wars films from Kevin Feige and Rian Johnson in the works. I have enjoyed movies from both and I’m excited for what future contributions they might bring to Star Wars. Kennedy seems to like working with them. And until I get information from a valid source which would not include a YouTuber getting their information from some anonymous source suggesting they have insider information, I have every reason to believe that these productions are going forward.

And don’t call me darling.

That’s called propaganda, it’s done by a government and not an individual. The intent and thought them aren’t even comparable. Governments and individuals aren’t the same thing. Do I need to explain the difference between a government composed of many people working towards a goal using government resources to project a good image while committing atrocities and a single human being a nice person confusing other people who think that everyone is just as sexist, racist and bigoted as them and that’s it’s impossible to be a decent human being?

I wish this was TNZ so we could expand on this, but it isn't so we won't.

There’s nothing to expand on. It’s a red flag for awful behavior. It’s quite common among incels and extremist far right groups. If anyone actually believes that it’s real, you should re-evaluate why you think that and what convinced you of that before it’s too late.

Thanks for this valuable advice.

Certain posters like to
use smug condescension to cover the weakness of their arguments and their general lack of good sense.
Don’t let them rile you. They aren’t worth it. :)
