Rey and the sad devolution of the female character

Shaka Zulu

According to this guy, Rey has devalued many future female characters by being what she was in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi:

A post about how poor Rey is as a character with the main body of the original post being a youtuber and their thoughts on the subject.

No offence Shaka but I can't think of two things that are more frowned upon especially in this part of the board. Either this will start a fire and brimstone argument or will quickly fade onto page two and beyond.

Anybody actually watch it? Because I see absolutely no point in it.
I started to because I like Ripley but I then thought this thread was going to get a predictable set of responses (mine included probably ) and I'm low on megabytes so I stopped.

It does make fair comment about Ripley - in my opinion.

I don't understand the need to post videos that reinforce ones views. If someone doesn't like the character, they should talk about why, not try to feed clicks to a YouTuber using division among the fanbase to make a dollar.

Why? This thread might be dodgy but it is about 'character' not profiling *fans*.
Some say fans others say Russian bots.

In fairness I have come across people online or elsewhere who are far more elequont than I and can sum up problems or praise for something more poetically or succinctly and so defaulted to using their words to get my point across.
Now that isn't the case here as the OP says that they don't disagree with the person and so they are just feeding them clicks but I could maybe understand if they were trying to reinforce their own views. Sometimes.

I’ve done that too. Thing is, I usually want to either expand on something they say, and/or disagree. You know...discussing or engaging with the content. Not in the least because I very rarely agree with everything in a video. The content creator isn’t me, so what’s the chances that our every thought on the matter is the same?

Dumping it and then telling others to argue or agree with it, just always seems...baity? Astro-turfy? A way to spread some of your views, whilst hiding behind someone else to avoid pushback?

Unless people are specifically asking for videos, of course. And even then, I’ll typically tell people why I’m reccommending it. Thouroughly. Like, you probably won’t even have to watch it by the time I’m done.

Why do you watch these kind of YouTube videos? This fixation baffles me.

I usually avoid these, but I sometimes like to see them just to see what others are saying (e.g., see the other side of things.) That doesn't mean I'll agree with them.

Truth be told I've only ever used them more as sound bites, two minutes from a video here or the end of a video there. Usually where they are summing up their overall point in a more succinct and powerful way than I could.

If you watch this, the youtube algorithm will assume that you want to watch more of this misogynistic shit, and collect it for you.

If you are unhappy with the algorithm, google will show you how to clock it back to zero, and you can try to make better choices.

Something I had to do after my nephew spent a weekend watching minecraft videos on my youtube account.

In my experience, anyone that feels they have to link to a rambling video to prove their point, probably doesn't have a very good point to begin with.
Certainly doesn't have the ability to articulate it all on their own, which makes the prospect of discussing it with them unappealing to say the least.

Well, there’s referencing. No ones born woke, so to speak. So you show all the influences that contributed to you forming your own idea.

But that’s not the same as ‘I think this represents me.’ I mean, there’s a reason why your average reference list contains more than one source. If you’ve only got the one, then you’re probably ill-informed and just parroting.

Plus, the entire idea of referencing is so that the information sources can be analysed and criticised by the reader. You’re meant to just dismiss certain information sources as ‘sexist bullshit’ and such. And tear an author/publisher/whatever a new arsehole for using and spreading them.

It's less of a problem with Rey and female characters and more with modern action blockbuster movies in general. A lot of characters are written in a very similar rather unrealistic fashion, whether it's Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek, Transformers, Valerian or whatever. Basically they've all become Marvel comic book movies in style.

You would not get Ripley like character nowadays, male or female. You wouldn't even be able to get that level of sustained seriousness.

With all that said, singling Rey out for criticism when the other three main characters are just as badly written is just pathetic.

The Star Wars movies have always had their main characters written to conform to preexisting archetypes. The only exceptions I can think of at the moment are R2 and 3PO.

C-3PO was conceived of as conforming to one set of archetypes, but Daniels brought something entirely different to the table. He's kind of like a butler, but he's also comedic in a way that is uniquely Daniels. R2 is something fairly novel altogether.

But all the other main characters? Archetypes.
