Rewatching TNG (Season 3).

Yeah, i liked the (different) atmospheres of the first three and half seasons way more than the blandness in later TNG, although there were still great episodes (like "The Inner Light" for example).

Interesting, I've never really got into 'The Inner Light'. I've always thought it gets more praise than it should. But that's just me, if people like it, they like it. I guess the thing that bothers me is that a lot of it takes place away from Star Trek world. Maybe my view on it might change soon, I think I'll put it on my annual TNG marathon this summer. =)
But first, 'Q Who.'

Season 3 is, in my opinion, the "transition" season, i.e. where the show was in the process from moving between the era of "prototype TNG" (seasons 1-2) and "real TNG" (seasons 4-7). Looking back over the episodes of season 3, it's definitely superior to both of the first two seasons, but not all that much in the case of season 2 (a season which I think is actually somewhat underrated). Season 3 doesn't magically become a brand new show, like some people on IMDb claim. There's still quite a few janky episodes that fall flat.

Still, it was good getting new uniforms and getting Beverly back (even though I actually liked Pulaski). I don't think season 3 is on the same level as seasons 4 and 5 (the real peak of TNG, in my opinion), but it's definitely superior to seasons 1, 2, 6 and 7.

During my current rewatch (now in S4), I'm finding Beverly so much more righteous and annoying than I remembered.

To my memory, S3 pumped out more GOOD episodes than any other season. You had three hits in a row with Yesterday's Enterprise, The Offspring and Sins of The Father.

The Defector isn't given enough praise - certainly one of my top TNG episodes.

I'd say the middle of TNG was the peak - that's a fairly generous range. There were good episodes throughout, but the ratio of good to mediocre started to favor the latter as time went on.

THere are a few that I could've done without like: Transfigurations, Menage a Troi, Tin Man, Captain's Holiday Allegiance, Deja Q, The High Ground, The Hunted, The Price, The Bonding.

I very much liked Deja Q. I also rather liked Tin Man and The Hunted (despite never understanding how Danar got out of the transporter beam). Most of the rest I'd just consider meh middle of the road Trek. Even Menage a Troi gave us the Shakespeare meme...er, scene.

I can see where some would not like it. It's very un-Trek-like. It's really an exploration of what Picard might have been like, in another life.

I loved it, and still do. But it's not universally beloved, and that's fine. Few great things are.

Pulaski was way better.

Especially the denouement. Picard may not have played much poker, but he knew how to have an ace in the hole... or three.

I don't know. But she developed more as a character in one season than Beverly did in six.
