As a big fan of both shows, I disagree. It's pretty clear that Farscape took some inspiration from Blake's 7. Nothing wrong with that.

Also inspiration from Buck Rogers, of course, with a space jump instead of a time jump, but we had a band of misfits who become freedom fighters and Grayza was basically Servalan. There were so many new elements though that Farscape was definitely its own thing.

Yup, absolutely on all counts, particularly Grayza coming from Servalan.

I think there's something to be said for Scorpius and Travis as well. Is it literally Blake's 7? Of course not but you got the small band of criminals on a stolen alien ship fighting against a repressive regime. I think there's a number of parallels but I doubt we'll ever convince each other if our minds are set the other way. :)

If that pissed you off with Farscape, then I would avoid Once Upon A Time, and Lost, which were almost unrecognizable after a few seasons.

There were some moments that made me roll my eyes, like how they would pull solutions for things out of nowhere.

Like in the 2 parter that introduced Scorpius: Crichton is in some device that taps your brain and pulls out memories. A former lover of his is able to rig the machine to play a fake memory that turns Scorpius and Captain Crais against each other.

How does she do this? All we see her do is just normal maintenance stuff. How the heck does that create a complex fake memory?

    Never explained.

Basically Crichton being lost in space. Obviously there is much more to the show then that, but that event was what "started" the show, and was a big part of his character. To me, everything went to shit once that stopped being a thing. I don't want that cast on Earth, period, and I got absolutely furious with the show once it basically became an hour long Alf reboot (alien(s) have wacky adventures of Earth). Keep it in space, don't involve time travel and evil Earth government stuff. It just totally destroyed the show for me, and that is actually pretty impressive since I managed to get through the horror that was every single sub plot that focused on Chiana :barf2:

They could easily have them never go to Earth. The show could have ended with John realizing that never finding Earth doesn't matter, especially since he stopped even trying to get back to Earth pretty quickly anyway. There was no reason to go there, they had to invent some BS and then we just got "Oh no, the aliens have been captured by the evil humans!!?!?!?!" crap. It doesn't help that they had already done the "What if John/the crew went to Earth" twice before Season 4, in two of the worst episodes of the series (A Human Reaction and Won't Get Fooled Again), so it was irritating and repetitive. I've watched most of Seasons 1-3 twice, but when I get to Season 4 I've never made it past Kansas.

I've tried to watch Lost, but never got past season 1. Once Upon a Time isn't really the type of show I'd like, although I did watch the first episode a long time ago. I do love the comic Fables, but contrary to what some people believe Fables and OUAT are pretty different, outside of some surface level stuff.

That said, a changed premise isn't necessarily always a death sentence (although I can't think of any that actually worked off the top of my head), but Farscape, for me, didn't survive its attempt at change.

2 episodes on earth (they left the next episode) and the whole series is suddenly an Alf reboot?

How exactly does that work? For real. It was 2 episodes out of 4 seasons and a TV movie. The premise went back to where it left off basically immediately. From the sounds of it, where you actually wanted it to go. Instead of lost in space, he went home to space.

I mean, she inserts a modified USB stick (for lack of a better word) that apparently is keyed to Crichton focusing on kissing her. It seemed painfully obvious to me in the show. None of her interactions in the machine felt like normal maintenance stuff.

My original watch petered out toward the start of season 3.

It’s not that I disliked it overall. It just didn’t give me enough beyond formula to maintain my interest. Characterization was base archetypes and Aeryn was the only character with any emotional nuance.

That's genuinely surprising to me as I thought they did the complete opposite, starting with the obvious archetypes then growing the characters well beyond that. With nobody exemplifying that more than D'Argo, who started as the clichéd big, dumb, gruff warrior of every sci-fi show and became so much more than that.

I thought Crichton grew too. Actually, I thought a lot of characters grew well, aside from Chiana.

I really need to rewatch this sometime. I never thought there'd be a day where there's so much stuff to watch that you have to pick and choose and try to fit.

Eh, it had already lost me. I no longer cared about the characters or what was happening. Scorpius was also being super annoying from what I can remember, although he was generally annoying in all of his appearances. Even if they ended up leaving Earth, the stop off killed my interest in the show. I'll occasionally rewatch the Season 1-3 episodes that I liked, but I will never go past the point of Season 4 where I dropped it.

I remember when the show was still airing and I would go to the Scifi channel chat rooms. The internet was only a handful of years at that point and it was a ton of fun discussing the show there. I remember Claudia Black would join the chat for a few minutes as ChickWithGun. Anthony Simcoe also participated from what i heard ....good times.

Nah, Scorpius is competent. Crais is the Travis analogue.

YOU feel old? I got my bbs start with the Wheel of Time chatroom, like '97 or so, and now I'm watching the previews on Prime.

I started with Andromeda. Of course I only watched that show for two seasons so my interest didn't last long.
