Revolving door...?

The only "good guy" regular that I recall being killed off is Katrina Cornwall. In one of the most ludicrously stupid scenes in the history of the franchise. Door only locks on one side, no one tries to use the transporters to pull her out. They used the character up and then didn't care whether how she died made a lick of sense.
Hugh is sad.

No, I’m just replying to you. I’m not taking anything personal.
Well, for clarification I think that there are fans who are treating Lower Decks as that serious link between series rather than the comedy it is meant as.

Hence the reason why we are discussing the minutia of the seriousness of the show and the show hasn't even been released yet. O_o

That is because CBS says it is canon, so why wouldn’t it be treated as a serious link between series?

It is just funny the number of times I get busted in the virtual chops for treating Trek as a multiverse, complete with a chorus of “CBS says!”. Then watch those same folks go on about what they ignore to make the universe work in their heads.

“I just don’t treat ‘X’ seriously!”

“Its a comedy so it shouldn’t count!”

“Early series weirdness!”

“It’s just a visual change, quit being a nerd!”

“Just a line from a fifty year old show! Who cares?!”

I’m treating Lower Decks as part of the vast Trek multiverse.

Yes...and?

I get busted all the time for daring to like Picard, DSC, Star Wars and the like.

Treat it how you want.

Because it itself is not treating itself seriously.

This isn’t actually true.

Mike McMahon has made it pretty clear that the show will be a comedy, but will take its place within the Trek canon respectfully and seriously.

Just because it’s a comedy, doesn’t mean it isn’t taking itself seriously. Final Space is ridiculous at times, but also has some of the absolute hardest hitting moments you’ll see in a currently airing sci-fi show. BoJack Horseman is another brilliant example of ridiculous humour being balanced with a real respect for the characters and their experiences.

I imagine that Lower Decks is going to be taking the Final Space, approach. And, if it does, then I know I’ll love it, even if it’s only half as good as that other show.

I fully expect to see characters promoted "up and out" of the cast as time goes by. Reassignments happen, as promotions do.

I’ve been thinking about this for a few days.

As it’s an animated series, they can obviously go for a very long time without ever having to age the characters...

I'm more in this camp. Animated series can get away with characters being steady state and not aging, and in the case of Star Trek, not getting promoted. That doesn't mean they can't grow as characters.

Look at Bob's Burgers (an excellent and sweet show by the way; the Belchers are a family with a ton of heart). Louise will forever be 9, Gene will forever be 11, and Tina will forever be an awkward teen, but the characters have had personal growth that has accumulated over the years and has become a permanent part of those characters.

Lower decks can potentially go 5, 6, or more seasons without ever needing to advance the time frame those 5 or 6 years, but the characters can still have personal growth. Animated shows are a different animal.
