Add me to the list of thinking this is more like Stirling's book series than Revolution. One other thing I think Stirling got right (well IMO anyway) is the huge population trimming that took place because of the 'power' going out.
Your major cities and densely populated areas became death zones because there wasn't a food supply and water supply for that matter (sure your water works if your power goes out, but if there's no power at water treatment plants then there's no water supply to homes.
I think something like 97-98% of the US population dies off in the series. Even in the areas where they rebuild civilzation you still have losses in the 90-95% percent range.
