Revisiting Stargate SG1...

I'm sure this is old hat around here, but about two weeks ago I started revisiting Stargate SG1 through the season sets.

Prior to this my servings of SG-1 and then later Atlantis have been sporadic. I had probably seen most of the episodes, but not always in order and regularly. I will say that after sampling SGU I just don't care for it---much of the reason is it lacks the charm of the previous casts.

I'm nearing the end of Season 3 and I've really gotten into this. While there are plot threads and ideas running through the series I like the basically episodic format--it's easily digestible and easy for any new viewer to jump into. My only serious quibbles were with a few very early 1st season episodes that were too much "ancient civilization of the week."

Oddly in its own way I find Stargate very Star Trek TOS like in how it uses its characters, the stories it tells and overall execution. I actually think it's a more genuine spiritual successor to TOS than any of the actual Trek spinoffs.

I'm liking all the characters, but I just love O'Neill. I love his down-to-earth everyman take on things and impatience with bullshit. :techman: And he personifies the series' down-ti-earth approach to humour. :techman:

I'm really looking forward to the following seasons...

Ditto here. I'm watching all episodes of SG-1 in order for the first time, we're about half-way through the first season. O'Neill is so funny.

I recall an episode where O'Neill remarks about the manner in which a Ga'ould system lord is speaking. "Oh, c'mon! Nobody really talks like that!"

Oh, SG1 was great fun- esp. the Showtime years. I really need to dig out my DVDs and give it another watch.

We rewatched SG1 fully, including the movies, earlier in the year. Well worthwhile.

For me, the show is almost three shows in one. You have the Showtime years, then you have the early SyFy years, and then you have the Cameron Mitchell years. The winning formulae was that it managed to incorporate changes where necessary, but managed to retain the essential hallmarks of what made the show great.

SGU, personally I view it as an entirely separate entity. That seems to work for me as I actually enjoy the new series, the end of the first season in particular was very strong.

Either way, enjoy, I still view SG as a massively important series to the genre. At 10 years duration, it was, for a good long time, the backbone of sci-fi on TV.

I've seen a couple of the movies, The Ark Of Truth and Continuum I believe (were there others?), and they were okay. I'll watch them again after I finish the ten seasons. Then I'll go onto Stargate: Atlantis.

I did watch the enhanced cut of the original pilot film (before launching into the season sets) and I thought it stood up rather well in light of knowing what follows in the series. I thought the series did a good of "fixing" or expanding on the essential ideas of the original film. The only disconnect is being so familiar with the series versions of O'Neill and Daniel Jackson.

I will add that when I originally watched the Mitchell episodes some years ago I really didn't warm much to him. I felt Mitchell was too much a retread of O'Neill without bringing anything really fresh to it. And Landry never worked for me as well as Hammond.

But I'm getting ahead of things...

Yeah, the movies were pretty meh. And it might make more sense to start watching Atlantis when you start season eight of SG-1. There is some overlap between the two shows.

Conversely, O'Neill's manner of speech is one of the few things about SG1 that I really couldn't stand. I would hate to serve under somebody like him, he doesn't appear to take anything seriously...

well for the most part he had one human soldier, Carter, under him. Most of the time a doctor and an alien or two aliens made up his primary command.

I recall an anecdote where Richard Dean Anderson met some actual military personnel and asked what they thought of his portrayal of O'Neill. Apparently they replied that in the real armed forces there are real guys more whacked out or offbeat than O'Neill is. Cool.

SG1 wouldn't be SG1 without O'Neil's sense of humour, and it would be worse for the loss.

The only thing that I found remotely irritating in regards to the cast was the way that Shanks left to 'do other stuff' but then later rejoined when the show moved to SyFy and they threw some extra cash his way. It wouldn't have been so bad had they not then completely fcuked over Corin Nemec and his character.

Yeah, what was up with that? I mean, Jonas Quinn was a bit annoying at first, but they went out of their way to avoid mentioning he ever existed or any of the season 6 episodes that focused on him ever happened. There was this one Atlantis episode where this old guy had the same future foresight that Jonas did and they had Carter act like she had never seen anything like it.

That's not exactly true. Jonas appeared in a mid-season 7 episode featuring Langara. It was also the episode which showed us that Naquadriah on his homeworld was actually manufactured instead of naturally occurring.

And they later mentioned that the Ori destroyed or conquered Langara in season 9 or 10.

Aside from the season 7 episode, Jonas was never seen or mentioned again. I think they decided to retcon him out after that episode or something. You would think that he would've showed up if Langara was being invaded, but we just get told about it, instead of getting an episode or two focusing on the homeworld of a former team member getting invaded.

Jonas can join Dr. Pulaski in that regard, I suppose. Heck, at least he did show up after his debut season.

I've started to watch classic SG-1 (pre season 8) again since SyFy is apparently only ever going to draw from seasons 9 and 10 anymore.

^That's stupid. That's like replaying Threshold again and again for the Voyager fans. Well, not quite that bad. More like only featuring Kes-centric episodes. No, that's probably worse than Threshold. Oh, boy, I certainly am off topic, aren't I.

I was bored yesterday so I watched Wormhole X-Treme, one of my favorite stand-alone nonsense episodes. Great show, especially the earlier seasons in my humble opinion.

and i watched 200 last night, the follow up of the 10th season. great fun and smart, homages to star trek, farscape, star wars and whatever else. since i started to watch all of stargate sg1, i haven't bothered anymore to express opinions to star trek. a shame i'm almost trough, and i hope atlantis and universe are up to the standard set by sg1. it just got better and better, and the ori arc is the best i've watched so far in sf.

I'm four episodes into Season 6 with Jonas Quinn just coming onboard. It's just my opinion, but revisiting SG-1 often reminds me of things I've grown to dislike so much about much of contemporary Trek. I just flat out love O'Neill. I love the humour that helps keep the show down-to-earth. And I like the more naturalistic, more believable portrayal of characters. I love the absence of overused, incredibly stupid technobabble.

There are occasional nitpicks, of course, but overall it's a fun ride.

just started season 8, and am watching the show episode-to-episode season-to-season, and i actually liked "the Jonas year" you had Jackson's personal storyline come to it's conclusion with the ascendancy of the harcesis child and they gave the charater a pretty good send-off at the end of season 5. Jonas brought something new to the show, his advanced evolution had so much potential, and the season 7 episode he was in would have had added so much more interest, if they kept him on the show and kept the Goa'uld alive.

Who did Corin Nemic piss off anyway?
