[REVIEW] - Star Trek #29

No name or reference to (the likely female version of) Nero. We were only shown that a ship named Narada came through the "lightning storm" in space the same number of years ago that it happened in ST '09 and that
Jane's mother assumed command for eight minutes and lost her life saving newborn Jane. Also, a reference is made to the older version of female Spock, presumably of the same gender.

Do we get to see the alternate Kelvin, or is the ship only refenced?

Only one panel, interior of the bridge. Identical to a shot from the '09 movie (but with a gender swap, of course).

I see. Do Narada and Enterprise look like the regular alternate reality version?

I don't know why, but I believe this page is one of the sweetest things never apparead in a Star Trek Comics...

They could still throw in a twist of course but apart from the exact time of Kirk's birth (assuming that women do give birth in this reality) everything looks superficially identical to the NuPrime.

Too bad. It's the details that make the charm. The mirror universe has its shiny yellow hull markings and ISS prefix, Q&A gave us variations in crew and prefixes, and Echoes played with uniform colors (e.g. Janeway in command orange). :bolian:

I wonder how folks at Memory Beta are going to call this new Enterprise to differentiate from the already "USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) (alternate reality)"? :rommie:

I read mine today, and totally agree. I was in a train and grinning away!

Although anyone who reads blurbs and examines cover art wouldn't be fooled, I loved the opening for this issue! It was fun trying to work out who was who under their disguises.

Also there were male versions of Rand, Chapel and Marcus. Makes you wonder if Chris Chapel is a real blond, or if he once flirted with the captain, or is close friends with Carl.

I still don't understand where the OP's sense of fun is. It was a great issue!

The presence of Chapel makes me hope that they might, within the comic, revisit the character (preferably as a brunette - we already have Carol, Rand, and now even Zahra has dyed her hair blonde).

The story basically read exactly the same as a 'normal' comic would. The acid test will be how sexist the banter will become if there is much interaction with NuPrime characters.

I don't think they meant the movie will pick up 5 years later. I figure they just mean that's the only place we'll see that for now. Or that they already expect the next movie to bring the ship back into charted space, even if it's during the 5YM.

Which would be a shame in the latter case, because for once I'd like to see a Trek movie that actually is about exploring strange new worlds.

I empathize with this sentiment. However, STID already set up Khan for a return in ST 3. This is Hollywood, and the formula is that the villain returns until he is killed for good (= justice is done). Khan survived the end of the movie, so he will return, threaten Earth and the Enterprise will rush back in no time to battle him, experience action sequences before killing him in the climax. Afterwards, the Enterprise returns to the 5YM just before the credits kick in.

I don't mean to criticize the formula here, only to state what I expect we'll see. I wouldn't mind being disproven though. I'm no film expert after all.

The bottom line is, we'll see the 5YM in the comics, and sneak peeks akin to the Nibiru mission in the films.

Insurrection had the Enterprise protect the strange new world Ba'ku. It's one of my all-time favourite Trek movies because it felt like what a continued TNG series double-parter would've been, and because it ditched the overused "Earth-in-peril" 'plot'.

But it's not technically an exploration mission. There's a bit of nominal exploration with the survey team at the beginning, but it's not the main focus of the story.

There was some exploration of the Genesis planet in STIII, but again, kind of a sidebar. Just about the closest thing to an exploration plot is the journey to ShaKaRee in ST V, but that's after the ship is captured and forced to go there, and, well, it's ST V.

Could TMP be considered an exploration of the V'ger entity, gradually unraveling the mystery of the strange new creature?

...

Second question: Is the name of Jane Kirk's, uh, parent given?

According to the summary given on Memory Beta, the Enterprise
is going to meet the 'regular' alternate reality crew! I hope the expressions on James and Mr. Spock's faces will be drawn good when they realize they've got sisters.

Also, it's nice to get another Enterprise-meets-Enterprise encounter. The last one we had was with Q&A, IIRC. Hopefully they give Jane's Enterprise a distinctive feature to differentiate the two ships visually.

I fully expect...
the Enterprise's phallic nacelles to be replaced with curvaceous warp breasts.
