I don't think they meant the movie will pick up 5 years later. I figure they just mean that's the only place we'll see that for now. Or that they already expect the next movie to bring the ship back into charted space, even if it's during the 5YM.
Which would be a shame in the latter case, because for once I'd like to see a Trek movie that actually is about exploring strange new worlds.
I empathize with this sentiment. However, STID already set up Khan for a return in ST 3. This is Hollywood, and the formula is that the villain returns until he is killed for good (= justice is done). Khan survived the end of the movie, so he will return, threaten Earth and the
Enterprise will rush back in no time to battle him, experience action sequences before killing him in the climax. Afterwards, the
Enterprise returns to the 5YM just before the credits kick in.
I don't mean to criticize the formula here, only to state what I expect we'll see. I wouldn't mind being disproven though. I'm no film expert after all.
The bottom line is, we'll see the 5YM in the comics, and sneak peeks akin to the Nibiru mission in the films.
Insurrection had the Enterprise protect the strange new world Ba'ku. It's one of my all-time favourite Trek movies because it felt like what a continued TNG series double-parter would've been, and because it ditched the overused "Earth-in-peril" 'plot'.
