Review of the 11th First Episode

Sure, but reality keeps edging in on that one for me. For instance, the surface temperature on Venus is hot enough to melt lead and the atmospheric pressure is 90 times that of Earth's (equivalent to a sea depth of 1km). I doubt this would significantly improve a few hundred feet under the surface.

Displacement by time is viable though. Perhaps they are from the distant past. We know that things on Venus were once quite different, and that the planet is currently in the grip of a runaway greenhouse effect. So, sure, that's possible.

In the end though, it's just rationalization though, isn't it?

The science in Doctor Who was always very bad. To think that the show was originally created to teach kids about history and science...
I must say it doesn't really bother me, like it would in Star Trek. Doctor Who is always more fantastical than truly utopian.

FWIW, the 1st Doctor book Venusian Lullaby is set in the far distant past, in the last days before the Venusian ecosystem collapsed.

It is horribly clichéd. Reminds me of that ghastly Ghostbusters reference in Army of Ghosts..
Yeah, that's exactly what it would be like. Embarrassing all round.

It's entirely possible I may be too old for this show now.
Eleven years ago, "The West Wing" had an episode where most of its cast declared "who da man?", so maybe there's another explanation. Maybe you're not that much into, you know, fun.
Yeah, fancy missing the fun in saying "who da man" like a bloody twit who should be eating fried chicken in a bus stop.

How on Earth do you manage to function in the presence of your fellow human beings if you insist on being so uptight? I mean, do you ever actually have fun, or do you just make frown-y faces at people when they try to tell you jokes?

I, for one, would love to see the Doctor in a Blaxploitation adventure.

"All you suckas come gather round, there's a brand new player comin' to town! So get on up outta those seats and check out ths smoothest, baddest alien to ever hit the streets. The Doctor is his name and he's about to change the game. He's super cool and knows Kung Fu; drives a pimped out TARDIS and wears a cheap ass suit. And not to sound egotistical or the least bit contrite, when it comes to his female companions, this cat is outtasight!"

Checkmate, you win the Internet!

I like jokes and fun as much as anyone, but that's just pratting around like an uncultured idiot. Which I don't really want from Doctor Who. You can argue that Tom Baker had a fair bit of buffoonery, but it was never anything so stupid as doing Scooby-Doo impressions.

Yes, that's right, spending two seconds doing a short little Scooby-Doo/Ghostbusters joke makes you an uncultured idiot.

Venus is partly terraformed a few thousand years from now?

Didn't he mention once that Venusians have four arms?

Amy sounds like she has an American accent rather than any UK accent I've heard, but sometimes it sneaks out.

I think that some Scottish accents just sound more pronounced to American ears than others.

ETA:

Is it my imagination or does Karen seem drunk in that video?

Yes she does, as I said somewhere else, as soon as I saw her on camera I though Shaun of the Dead style, she is soooooooooooo drunk :rommie:

She's definitely Scottish to my ears. And definitely a bit tipsy too, or maybe just nervous. :rommie:

I totally buy Matt as the Doctor now.

I don't think it's your imagination  I don't think she's really drunk, but obviously had one pre-premiere drink too many perhaps, probably as others have said maybe some nerves too.

The first episode of each new series is always fluff and a 'romp', a hook for the lowest common denominator. I expect this episode to be no different. Bring it on!!!! :D
