Review of Duet. First time watching as an adult.

I couldn't agree more, Duet is a masterpiece. Easily the stand out episode from the season and definitely in my top 3 DS9 episodes ever. The acting from the guest star is phenomenal and is matched by Nana. Kira up to this point is so sure of herself and her belief that what she thinks is always right (whether that be the federation not belonging on DS9 or that the provisional government are useless) suddenly makes a realisation that things can change are there are always exceptions to the rule. The only thing I did feel let this episode down was the drunk Bajoran, I though his lines and his acting were below par. Other than that though an amazing piece of television.

For me the one hiccup in this episode is the quickness of his death at the end (from a single stab wound!) -- let's at least TRY to get a med team to save him! You guys are right next to the Infirmary!

Otherwise, fantastic, nearly perfect, one of the best episodes in all of Trek.

Whenever something like that comes up, my son and I will say, "Plot speed ahead. Engage!," referencing how the distance to Earth will change with the needs of the story.

I am fine with the way it ended suddenly. A drawn out death would have dilluted the shock of the stabbing, and cut down on time earlier in the episode showing Visitor and Yulin's excellent interplay.

I wonder what kind of justice Marritza's killer faced.

As an earlier episode stated, the Bajoran provisional government had been taking a rather easygoing attitude towards those who killed Cardassians. So I wonder if Kainon faced any prison time for killing Marritza.

Unlikely. Or maybe he had charges reduced to manslaughter or something and got paroled after a few months of the other prisoners treating him like a hero.

Interesting you mention "as an adult"

I would have been about 13 when I first watched it, other episodes were far more impressive to me at that time - captive pursuit stood out as I recall, Duet didn't.

Yeah I just don't remember watching it clearly. The visuals seemed very familiar, but I didn't remember the story. Been a trek fan my whole life, but introducing my wife to it by watching all the series has got me back into it, reminded me why I loved it

Duet is personally my favourite episode of DS9. I loved the death scene at the end as well. I'm not sure what the intention of the writer was when he wrote that scene, some have speculated it's just to show Kira has changed her views. I think that had already been shown in the episode though, so I read it more as an alternative viewpoint to the consensus that had been established around Marritza's innocence. That perhaps he truly did deserve to die because of his role in the death camp, no matter how minor the role was or how reluctantly he carried it out. I think thats a fair debate and I like how the episode ends like that leaving the question open for the viewer.

Honestly can't remember the last time I saw this episode, I definitely remember liking it for the story and ideas, and the reveal of his true identity, might have to go and rewatch it myself and see if I pick up on the rest.

Bajorans spent decades killing Cardassians so would know a thing or two about where best to strike to take them out quickly.

"Duet" is excellent! My favorite DS9 episode!
Not to mention that Harris Yulin is one of my favorite actors. He has been that since I saw him as Mr Peasley in "The Macahans". :techman:

Aside from the dodgy acting of the drunk Bajoran and the awful, stagey final shot, it's a brilliant episode.

On the other hand, it did happen on Deep Space Nine. Not sure what Odo would do.

Odo did work for the Bajoran government so I think he would go along with whatever the courts decide. If the guy ever returned to the station though I suspect he would be secretly monitored or might not even be allowed back on. Odo can play fast and loose with the laws but he tends to exert that power on how he operates on the station. The government might send a official complaint but I doubt they would put much of a fight over a guy with a criminal record, especially if Sisko choose to back Odo's choice. I think he would since the crime happened on the station which was different from some of the other criminal element that would sometimes come to the station were their crimes happened on other worlds.

The actor playing the Cardassisn was excellent. For me it's a painful episode in that his acting makes you be able to feel his emotions. Too bad TV and movies doesn't contain more actors that can actually act.
