Reveal: New transporter design!

Also, does that armour remind anyone else of the ill-fated 2013 Star Trek videogame?

No. Not really.
Yep. Really. Not as weapons, at least.

Guess what, we can do that exact same thing with the word laser.
No. You can't. Because a LASER does nothing more than generate a coherent and polarized beam of light. It was a silly mistake made in a moment of untempered exuberance back in 1964, and it was corrected by the time the show got picked up for regular broadcast. Stop trying to undo that correction.

First reaction: Definitly weirded out. That looks different. And I#m not 100% convinced.
Second reaction: Let's see it in context, and what the Discovery has to offer. Other thoughts:

1. I hope they still stand on pads and have pads above them. Then I would be 100% fine with it.
2. All previous trnsporter rooms had some funky backwalls. Maybe this is what they all look like behind the fassade? And going with the Shenzhou's 'workhorse'-look the tech is simply not covered and hidden behind well designed walls?
3. Despite having major concerns, I like that it looks like a big, SCARY machinery. As a thing that splits you into atoms and sends you to different planets should.

Final thought:
Now I'm REALLY curious what the main engineering will look like:D

And you can't vaporize people with an electronic sound processor or a dazzler weapon.

Oh. So what was done in the '60s DOES matter. Unless, of course, it's set or costume design.

Sensible decisions not to use a product that is now a common household item as a deadly futuristic space weapon are worth respecting, yes.

Yah, know like Star Wars having LASER blasters and LASER swords, and turboLASERS. We all know how easily confused audiences can be. No franchise could possibly be successful using the word "laser" as a name for a weapon..

Star Wars has light sabers and blasters, for the most part. The use of 'laser', when they do use it on occasion, definitely sounds dated. You could possibly get away with it even today if the weapon worked like an actual laser (Firefly did this). But a phaser as normally depicted does not.

Those crazy Chinese bootlegs on the Shenzou...

It does have a bit of a 60s retro vibe to it though. Along with the epaulets seen on that Lorca uniform it looks like there may be touches of that sprinkled about. Might be a way to keep a bit of a retro vibe of that era even as they update other elements.

I don't see the problem. The only thing that really stands out as different are the fans/speakers/turbines/whatever they are. The yellow checkerboard pattern is no different than the usual array of backgrounds:

Also, it's indicated this is the Shenzhou's room, and that ship likely predates anything we've seen before from the 23rd century.

So, all's good. Let's relax!

The problem is they are too close to the speakers, and woofers that large aren't going to have tight mid-bass.

But seriously, the only problem is most of the design we've seen is aesthetically questionable, putting it mildly.
But again, none of that matters as long as the show is good.

Everyone says that, but it isn't so.

If the show looks like crap it will die a quick death.

Trek is about mind and idea expansion for me. This is definitely doing it. Can't wait to see engineering and weapons fire. They are really making this different. I like what I'm seeing so far and seems like they are proud of it to show it off so early. September 24 can't come soon enough.

If you don't think Discovery "looks like crap", then I apologise for concluding it, but I continue to be astonished at the absolutism of fans. Any astetic, casting, design, or setting choice that a fan dislikes, it is then concluded that that is a failure, or terrible, etc which is then concluded means certain doom for the show.

I can't understand if these fans are just unable to see beyond their own subjective opinions to see that there aren't universal truths, or if they have prejudices that won't let them be open to anything new or different.
