Reused Props In Kelvinverse Movies?

While watching a commentary on Star Trek Three, one of the production hands noted that some of the props made for the movie were used repeatedly throughout the next generation and on. He referred to them as legacy props.

Were any old props used in any of Abram's productions? Or did they start completely fresh due to a higher budget?

I believe Paramount sold off most of the remaining old stuff via auctions years ago, so most everything was new. Although, I suppose they could have rented some background items from prop rental houses that had previously supplied similar to earlier productions.

Even the stuff that looked like the classic stuff, like the USS Kelvin communicator, was actually redesigned and built from scratch.

FWIW, the only legacy prop from TOS in The Motion Picture was Uhura's earpiece, and that's because she brought an old one after the new one they designed for her was uncomfortable.

The story I once read is she arrived up on set and asked where her ear piece was, the designers had completely forgotten about the prop and do someone had to quickly find an original from a box of archived props that luckily had survived (I guess amongst some of the items they had on hand from the Phase II TV show).

I defer to your story, since my recollection is extremely fuzzy.

yeah. the It's a Wrap sale pretty much scoured them of old props, costumes, etc.

I remember when they sold off that stuff. I missed out on some great Klingon corpses.

some of the props were definitely rented for star trek 2009. there are banks of computers in the kobayashi maru simulator control room and in the hallway outside uhura's quarters that were used in the CIC of the 2003 battlestar galactica.

other than that i think everything was custom made or converted specifically for the film.

But they didn't have that red neon tube thing

That reminds me! One of the weapon props from "Arsenal of Freedom" is in Scotty's junk shop by the shuttle, but I think it's only visible in a behind-the-scenes set photo in the Art of the Movie book.
