Retro Review: Projections

I never know what to make of this one. On the one hand, it's a reasonably diverting piece of entertainment (especially if you like the doctor) and plays with the matrix style notion of reality in a fun way (though not remotely original) but on the other, it doesn't really make much sense.

Firstly, I think it's far too early in the series to start having the doctor question the nature of his reality and secondly, the whole thing just feels like a throw-away episode that embodies the reset mentality of Voyager. So much so that when the doctor meets Barclay again later in the series, he behaves as though he has no idea who this Barclay chap is (um, he's the dude you spent all that time with in Projections, mate).

A fun romp but essentially worthless in the grand scheme of things. If you never saw this episode, it would make little difference to your Voyager experience (though you could say that about a few episodes). The doctor's journey to self-aware sapience is better explored in other episodes.

This one is really exciting with a lot of unexpected twists and turns. In fact, I wasn't sure that the episode was really over until the end credits started to roll when I watched it the first time. The Doctor is excellent and Kes plays an important an unexpected role here too. In fact, all the main characters have come unexpected scenes in this episode. The whole "I'm a living person and the others are hologram" is a funny scenario.

Nice to see Barclay too, he fits in perfect in this "nightmare" or whatever we could call this scenario and his interaction with The Doctor is great.

My favorite "twist in the tale" is what's happening after The Doctor wakes up in sickbay.

One of Voyager's best episodes and one of my top 10 favorites!

I'll give it 5 points out of 5.

One of the ones I label 'not bad'. Not a favorite but I won't beg my husband to skip when we do the re-watch (Like I did with TNG Sub Rosa).
