Retro Review: Deadlock

On the plus side Kes had quite a bit to do in this episode. :techman:

The massive damage to Voyager and just having it be okay in the next episode was not believable. (I set aside the splitting in two thing. ) Multiple hull breaches, stress fractures, the warp coils in both warp nacelles fused, and their anti-matter supply almost nonexistent would mean they probably had to put down on a planet somewhere for a month.

This was really the point in the series where the supply problems of Season 1 basically went out the window, wasn't it? They continued to mention replicator rations later on but Voyager herself rarely had an energy or supply crisis (except for that one horrid S4 episode) - and was even ready to take on a two-year trip with no chance of resupply in S5. The instant repair job after Deadlock kind of seals things.

Other than that, though, it's a pretty good episode. I agree that everyone seems to be taking Harry's death in stride, but they're (mostly) trained professionals who are trying to keep the ship from falling apart around them - there will be time for mourning later. And the scene with the two Janeways meeting is classic.

I think at the time I may have been frustrated that the ship was fine in the next episode, but that's not a fault of this episode, happily.

I also don't consider this a parallel universe story given that the division happened about five minutes into the episode; there's no evidence to suggest that there were differences prior to that point.

Well in Janeway's defense her ship was on the verge of being destroyed. Mourn later.

Watching the Amazon version it goes like this.
Torres: "Torres to bridge. Ensign Kim is dead. Kes just disappeared."
Janeway: The mourning beat. "Disappeared?"
Torres: "I can't explain it. She just vanished..."
*Shit continues to hit the fan*

If anything Torres' reaction was more muted than it should have been just watching her friend get blown out a hull breach.

noted. In fact it got my wheels turning here. Perhaps we're all expecting more shock value because we're not used to those scenarios. What I'm saying is, perhaps both especially Torres,' would be muted in emotion because she's seen a lot of dead friends :(

Hadn't thought of that. She probably did lose quite a few friends in the Maquis, though that was never touched on until Season 5 (when they finally dealt with losing all their friends).

^True

Actually even Chakotay expressed emotion at Kim's death. Maybe more than Janeway. ;)

I thought Chakotay was pretty awesome during the bridge destruction scene. Giving orders and even yelling at Janeway when she was being stubborn and trying to save the bridge to the last moment.

Which begs another question. Do you think they had a memorial service for their Ensign Kim and baby Naomi? With the new Ensign Kim in attendance? Awkward...

I just watched it earlier this evening (Youtube). The pause was indeed brief, but in her turning to Chakotay to register her response, I think Janeway did express, what I would describe more as a moment of disbelief, than shock. The fact that B'Elanna hurriedly added Kes's fate, makes it hard to distinguish Janeway's reaction between the two. However, given that Kes might still be alive at this point and Harry is incontrovertibly not, plausibly explains, for me at least, why the Captain asked only about the former and said nothing about the latter. As a number of others have already commented, there would be time later for those words to be uttered.

Yeah!

Since it's a fictional show I'd like to take a moment to have zero shame saying Kim floating in space saved them a torpedo case.

Harry's and Naomi's deaths were both discussed at length by hux ehm father huxmas.

This is one of the better episode, with the holo doc revelling in his own achievements and the Viidians getting the shit end of the stick in the end. At least this episode was better than the demon planet one.

Janeway interacting with herself was a sight to be seen. No important scenes for Chuckles, though.

Regardless that they was discussed, I would like them to live much more time in the series ;)
