Retire "fanwank"

Correct me if I am wrong...

I have always understood the term "fanwank" to be a fan overcreatively rationalizing something that doesn't make sense. Like coming up with a whole bogus backstory for a character to "explain" why something happens to him, or coming up with some protracted explanation of how the tech was used to do something on the show that was done, but SHOULDN'T have been able to be accomplished.

THAT is fanwanking.

Tony

I wouldn't tolerate it being used @ "Star Trek: Hell's-Gate" Yahoo groups, which are all about encouraging shy first-time fanon writers to submit their ideas to TrekBBS, Fan Fiction.Net, Trek Writers' Guild, Hope Station, & Pocket Books / Paramount-Viacom's "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" (among others.)

As Moderator of the "Star Trek: Hell's-Gate" groups, I'd take the term "fanwank" or "fanwanking" as flaming/imping & thoroughly against all that amateur / non-professional fan fiction stands for.

A member would be permanently BANNED instantly for such behavior.

It demeans & belittles a writer's ability to just cut loose & have fun. Writers shouldn't have-to get the creepy feeling that they must constantly be prepared to look over their shoulders in order to steel themselves for viciously over-zealous Treknobabble-based critique.

Calling something "fan-wank" is hardly a "viciously over-zealous Treknobabble-based critique." Its a valid criticism, though I think its more usefully applied when referring to professionally published works or productions, which should be above gratuitous fansterbation.

EliyahuQeoni: Yeah, there was an awful (intentionally-created) "fan wank" ship called the U.S.S. Murder or Murder-Class at Bravo Fleet or somewhere else I've seen online, used to depict what you're getting-at.

I think fanwank should have its own forum at the Trek BBS.

Fanwank is Continuity porn created by professionals (treks producers & writers) and placed in a movie or episode to cause viewers to have a fangasm. Fans cannot create fanwank only respond to it.

To take the concept beyond the critique of narratives, the term will never be retired as long as folks keep posting ridiculous which of the 5 series is the best polls when we all know that this is a totally DS9-crazy board. Not that there's anything wrong with that--still, that same stupid poll popping up again is nothing but narcissism.

This is obviously going to cause a schism leading to an all-out war between fans on the same scale as 'Joel vs Mike'.

"Fanwanking is done by fans!"
"No, fanwanking is done for fans!"
"By!"
"For!"

I just hope battles over fanwank don't lead to chants of "Tastes great!" or "Less filling!"

For once, I agree completely with my quite-honorable colleague 'Capt. Calhoun'. Its fanon. Pure and simple.

Er… I don't get this.

Wanking, as in masturbating, right?

What does any of this have to do with wanking?

Since most of these guys don't have sex, they masturbate to Trek novels that feature all the Trek captains meeting at DS9 to battle the Borg, Q and Species 8472 in a souped up fully armoured KickAss Class star destroyer that can cruise at Warp 20 and has 40 surface mounted phaser canons and uberquantum obliterati torpedoes.
