Writers shouldn't have-to get the creepy feeling that they must constantly be prepared to look over their shoulders in order to steel themselves for viciously over-zealous Treknobabble-based critique.

Correct me if I am wrong...
I have always understood the term "fanwank" to be a fan overcreatively rationalizing something that doesn't make sense. Like coming up with a whole bogus backstory for a character to "explain" why something happens to him, or coming up with some protracted explanation of how the tech was used to do something on the show that was done, but SHOULDN'T have been able to be accomplished.
THAT is fanwanking.

I just hope battles over fanwank don't lead to chants of "Tastes great!" or "Less filling!"payndz201 said:
This is obviously going to cause a schism leading to an all-out war between fans on the same scale as 'Joel vs Mike'.
"Fanwanking is done by fans!"
"No, fanwanking is done for fans!"
"By!"
"For!"
