Restored picture of Enterprise first arrival.

Not necessarily.

Well, I said "average Californian," and I can imagine they were not familiar with magazines like Science Fiction Plus. :)

It's all guess work on both our parts. I also said in my original statement that someone could have mistaken it for a giant "machine part" which supports your point.
I think we can both agree that most people would have thought...

So clearly the NEW show needs a time travel episode where they go to Burbank in 1964... and walk past the model... and make no reaction whatsoever.

Was surfung the net (especially the "wayback machine" Internet archive) last couple days trying to find photos of the big E I'd never seen before. I haven't found any more from Volmer Jensen's photo roll (yet :)), but I did find the following that perhaps some of you have also never seen. These pics are not exactly what I'd call "high-res", but they do offer some nice detail. Some of the shots showing the underside of the saucer clearly show some very subtle gridlines that I can't say I'd ever seen such clear evidence of. The lower sensor dome "tallywhacker" is also fairly clearly shown in couple shots. They also clearly show weathering / streaking, for example on the backs nacelles. And they clearly show the shape of the deflector dish "spire".

Also found this interesting shot that shows how they hid the inner starboard side nacelle wiring with some tape (I'm thinking this was done for the "Trouble With Tribbles" K7 approach shot of the Enterprise from behind / between the nacelles). Hopefully this technique will not be reproduced by the Smithsonian in their stated efforts to restore its condition to its appearance at the time of the filming of that episode! ;)

Well, now we all have...:)

Here's some more "roll-out" photos, courtesy of the Google machine; some of these B&W images are taken from similar angles to color versions posted already, but they are all distinct from any posted so far in this thread.

I got that from Tony Kornheiser from ESPN; I think it's supposed to parody what old people call the Internet. Like how my Grandfather never said "TV", it was a "television set".

From the shadow in the last photo, it looks like the photographer is looking down into the viewfinder, meaning an older, possibly large format camera. The negative detail should be excellent if it has survived well.

My exact thought. As a teenager I used an old Yashica TLR camera belonging to my parents. The top of the camera flipped open and you looked down into it. I used to put it on the tripod to take what we now call screencaps of the TV. Timing was everything, because there was no "home video" back then and no going back for a second try.

Do we think that was Datin's shadow on the street, btw? Or did he just take the color pictures?

Looks like I'll be in DC on Sept 8th and through the following weekend. Got my tix reserved to see the Man Trap at the NASM on the national mall, so I'll be seeing the big E on the perfect day in my opinion. Will make it my 4th time seeing her.
