I'm probably over-analyzing the situation, which is why I need to ask this question in the first place, but what exactly was Chakotay saying with that made up story he told Janeway? Was he saying he wanted to be romantically involved with her, or was he saying they would just remain friends and he would support her like he did on Voyager...or something completely different? And for that matter, what was Janeway implying when she said they needed to set up parameters? What did she want?

Obviously I knew they would get back on the ship, but I was actually sad when they left...especially when the monkey waved goodbye after they beamed up. They seemed a little sad as well.

He was going to support her. He believed in her cause.

As for her, my interpretation was she was putting up boundaries. At the least discuss intentions.

And Chakotay never did accept that, fully. For years, we were made witness to his aching ... his longing ... his yearning ... for Kathryn. And she was made witness to it, as well. He was pretty blatant about it, which was the most embarrassing part.

But she also made it clear several times that she would not get involved with anyone under her command

Yes, she was true to her word, like when she said that she would return the crew on Earth. :techman:
And about Chakotay's behaviour on the unknown planet, while it left from a good intention (I think that he was really worried about his well-being, so much he built a wooden bathtub and was on the verge to build a boat), there was a strong intention to seduce Janeway and the massage was the climax.

[Shelter]

(Janeway comes out of her bedroom.)
JANEWAY: We have to talk about this. (= the massage and the sexual atmosphere induced)
CHAKOTAY: All right.
JANEWAY: I think we need to define some parameters (= I want to set up boundaries between you and me so that our relationship remains platonic).
CHAKOTAY: I'm not sure I can define parameters. But I can tell you a story, an ancient legend among my people. It's about an angry warrior who lived his life in conflict with the rest of his tribe, a man who couldn't find peace, even with the help of his spirit guide. For years, he struggled with his discontent. But the only satisfaction he ever got came when he was in battle. This made him a hero among his tribe, but the warrior still longed for peace within himself. One day he and his war party were captured by a neighbouring tribe led by a woman warrior. She called on him to join her because her tribe was too small and weak to defend itself from all its enemies. The woman warrior was brave and beautiful and very wise. The angry warrior swore to himself that he would stay by her side, doing whatever he could to make her burden lighter. From that point on, her needs would come first. And in that way, the warrior began to know the true meaning of peace. (= I am there to ensure - particularly lovingly - on you and to answer ALL your desires, if you are interested),
JANEWAY: Is that really an ancient legend?
CHAKOTAY: No. But that made it easier to say.

I think that at the end of this scene, Chakotay understands that nothing will happen between them in a immediate - and beyond - future .. ., what didn't prevent him of trying again, more shyly in "Hunters"

from Chrissie's transcript site - voyager transcript (Hunters - 4x15)
CHAKOTAY: ... . We manage to make another enemy who's going to try and hunt us down and destroy us, and on top of that
JANEWAY: It's all right. You can say it. On top of all that, I got a Dear John letter. It wasn't really a surprise. I guess I didn't really expect him to wait for me considering the circumstances. It made me realise that I was using him as a safety net, you know, as a way to avoid becoming involved with someone else.
CHAKOTAY: You don't have that safety net any more. (= no more excuses not to pursue a romantic relationship)
JANEWAY: That's right. Then again, my life is far from uneventful here in the Delta Quadrant. It's not like I would have had a chance to pursue a relationship, even if I had realised I was alone.
CHAKOTAY: You're hardly alone, and to my way of thinking, there's still plenty of time. (= I'm here and still madly in love with you ...and ready to wait as long as it takes)
JANEWAY: Plenty of time.

Are you sure you didn't have jc glasses on? When I rewatched it and stopped forcing my agenda it only appeared possible in Q and the Grey, because he voiced it, and Hunters because he was laying it on thick (from my perspective ) and that scene (which was the reshoot version btw) they were to remove Janeways longing. Guess Beltran didn't switch gears or perhaps it was intentional and it left us pondering if Chakotay was dropping a hint. I don't think he was after her after that point. If you exclude books.

Are you sure you didn't have jc glasses on?
"I cannot be certain."

Perhaps, I overstate Chakotay's one burning desire ... but not much! Ironic, isn't it, that Kate Mulgrew should be the one -- the only one -- to stand between Chakotay and his destiny.

I really accept and appreciate that janeway had no intention in becoming romantically involved with anyone during the journey home.

But it wouldn't have been that wrong to have a "happy end" between Janeway and Chakotay at the end of the last episode.

I'm not actually a J/C-er but I can see their point and I really wished all of them that happy end.

There is really no such thing as a "happy end" because it is impossible to please everyone.

There 'liking' for each other was mutual.

Eventually, what I didn't find at all, is the fact that, even after Resolutions, producers and scriptwriters continued to let smooth the idea in J/C shippers minds, of a still possible romance between the 2 commanding officers (like the continuation of candlelit dinners/discussions in Janeway's quarters, long looks full of allusions), which makes people thought there was still some hope for future seasons and all that with the aim of retaining them to leave the ship (= Voyager fandom, whose they represented an important part), while neither the main actress, aka Kate Mulgrew, nor the producers - once Jeri Taylor wasn't executive producer anymore (she was the instigator of the J/C's romance, as a reminder!), intended to pursue this idea.

Yes, from s1 to s3, Janeway and Chakotay openly flirted, especially at the beginning of their forced association and it could have bloomed in something more serious in following season until reaching a climax at the end of Endgame, like a public declaration of love but well, Resolutions was a turning point, where Janeway explained to Chakotay that she couldn't be what he wanted her to be, and it is why this episode was so important, in my opinion. That and the pleasure to see Janeway prefered a perceptive monkey to Chakotay! :guffaw:And then seriously, after what's happened in Scorpion, Equinox and even Endgame (pt 1), which damaged the friendship (respect and trust) that they shared - even if it was never clearly mentioned - how could these both end together?!

Today, 16 years after the releasing of Endgame, more than half of fans were disappointed by the end given to the series, especially about the fate of Janeway and Chakotay, including me but not for the same reason. Indeed, while J/C shippers wanted to see them ending together in the last minutes of Endgame, I was happy to see a single Janeway pursue the brilliant career she dreamed and deserved, but quite annoyed to see that producers chose to make C/7 an item, just not to make Chakotay a big looser, with the consequence to make a dent in Seven's image (to become human doesn't mean making someone who was previously strong & brilliant, a weak & naive individual -> the Seven we used to know in s4-5-6, would never have chosen Chakotay as a mate) by the way.

Been a while since i watched Voy, but I get the picture that Chakoty came to respect and eventually love Janeway, but "not really" romantically. More like permanent friendzoned.

They were stuck on a planetoid, alone for 6 months.

2 weeks in he says "I know you don't want to bang me, so I'm going to wait till you ask me to bang you, this is my last word on it, I am never going to talk about banging you ever again, until after you've told me that it's time for you to get banged, and you want me to do the banging. I give you three weeks. We cool?"

Sex doesn't equal love.

HE MADE HER A RECESS BATH!

(So maybe he loved her?)

HA!

What if that's always been his first move?

Plumbing.

He sneaks into a suitor's house and installs a new toilet.

"This is how much I love you. I noticed your ass was too big for your toilet, and did something about it. Taking a dump from now on should be veeeeery comfortable."

Well, I'd say that at the beginning, Chakotay fell in love with Janeway, the woman, while respecting her as capitain. Later, he finally accepted the idea that there would be nothing between them and only their friendship stayed but even if the lattest was strong, it obviously suffered after the events in Scorpion, Equinox and Endgame - pt 1.
Maybe their friendship survived after their return to earth or maybe not. I know that post-Voyager books published, mentionned that both finally ended together but even Meyer & Cie work was approved by Paramount/CBS, would it have been what Berman/Braga have have made, in an eventually s8 or a TVmovie, knowing that it was clear that the opinion of the fans mattered little for them?
