Resistance Now In Print

I double-checked. The last Trek novel I read, Reap the Whirlwind was nearly twice the length of Resistance. Any shorter than that 450 pages, and for me, it's barely worth reading.
Gee thanks, says the author who's never cracked 400 pages in his entire 30-novel career. :) (Well, okay, technically Articles of the Federation broke 400, but only if you count the acknowledgments and bio....)

I was, too.

I started Resistance late-afternoon, ate dinner, farted around on the 'net, coined the phrase "Emo Worf," and finished the book.

What can I say? Saturday was miserable in Charm City. Wasn't like I had anything else doing. *shrug*

My favourite book is the NF novel “Once Burned” with 262 pages which is short compared to many other, especially more recent books. Nevertheless, in quality the story was huge. Also, there are quite a few great short stories around. At least I enjoy reading anthologies, too.

I certainly prefer it if a great story is also very long but a short but very satisfying story is very welcome, too.

Are you pretty new to Trek reading? Back in the day, I think the average Trek book was about 260-280 pages. I can see how you wouldn't have much interest in it back then.

I got my copy of Resistance last night... Picked it up at about 10:30, finished it at 2:30 AM... and that was with an interruption or two and a snoring dog.

Actually, no. I've been reading Trek fiction since I was seven years old, which was 1990. The Lost Years and Final Frontier were the first I remember reading.

I was speaking hyperbolically - but, to me, most new Trek fiction is too short. If it's a good story, I want more; if it's bad, I feel like I completely wasted my time. I suppose as I've grown, my taste for longer, more involved, complex fiction has grown as well.

Resistance just seems too short to me, like it should have been combined with Before Dishonor to make a single novel, instead of two "half-sized" ones.

I can see where you're coming from. I'm trying to get into more mainstream SF, but I find that I'm not really interested in anything that isn't a big series (like Niven's Ringworld) or at least an interconnected universe (like Asimov's Robots/Foundation/Empire). For me, if it's just one book, it usually ends just when you're starting to enjoy it.
But, I subsribe to the "grand tapestry" viewpoint of Trek, where it's all just one big story. Add to that, that I get most of my Trek books from the library (my library system has very strong coverage of new Trek Lit), so whenever I get around to reading Resistance and Before Dishonor (and Hide and Q), I won't have to consider price, so it'll be easy to think of them as three parts of one big story.
But anyway, what I was trying to say is that I can understand your point of view in not getting as much out of shorter stories. :)

Keep in mind that Lost Years and Final Frontier were big deals... special novels. I prefer a mix of long and short, and while I'll agree that $7.99 is a bit expensive for a book in my estimation, I'd rather have a mix of long and short works. Some episodes, some two-parters, and some features (if you follow the analogy).

Besides, have you seen how long DRG3 can write if you give him enough material to work with (and if he feels the story needs it)!

Make KRAD and PAD do all that work and then have to split their royalty? ;)

Did you mean KRAD's upcoming book Q&A? Because Hide and Q was a first season TNG episode.

Crap. Yeah, my bad.
I swear...I'm under thirty and I think my mind is going already. :p

Hey, I'm 19 and I already have trouble remembering stuff, so you're not the only one.

Read it in one day. Thought that it was a good story, if a little be redux of FC and BOBW. It was a tight story, with no messing around, it got the the action fast. Cannot wait to see Worf, T'Lana and all the others grow into their roles in the TNG-R. I am also intrigued by the promo for Before Dishonor. I am really excited to see 7of9 and Janeway with the TNG crew. All in all, ***1/2 out of ***** from me.

FYI: The book that is relaunching TNG is now available for purchase at your fine retailer.
Yep, I picked up my copy, along with a copy of Death in Winter (paperback) & CoE: Grand Designs (trade) this mornin' at the Northlake Borders.
You couldn't have - because I picked up the exact same books yesterday at Borders. :D

Well, except for Grand Designs, I know that they had more than one copy of the other books I bought.

Guess they got another one of the CoE trade before ya got to the bookstore, huh?

;) :D

I always thought it was picing up the pieces from FC and BOBW. I think of this book as a sequel to FC.. I also don't like T'Lana. It doesn't seem like she's a good fit for Picard and company. I prefer Troi but she got married and went away so Starfleet had to compensate. I do think she's under developed but maybe that's just me.

It seems to me that J.M. Dilliard likes writing short novels because her last book Surak's Soul was also fairly short and that wasn't really the great of a book.

Hmmm. Now Amazon has knocked back the delivery time from 1-3 weeks to 2-3 weeks and still no word on my local comic shop getting it in.
