Yet another TV show I'm trying out on DVD - looks like this one's a keeper.

After two episodes, I'd say:

-The only really interesting character is Tommy (Dennis Leary) but he's good enough to carry the show by himself, if necessary.

-Talking to ghosts is a bit gimmicky and could wear out its welcome fast.

-The troglydite firefighter routine could also get old.

-The subject matter should provide plenty of fodder for interesting episodes; it's unlikely ever to get boring.

-Marital problems as a plotline don't interest me. Hopefully this divorce thing doesn't drag on and on.

-Overall, good enough to get me interested in seeing more.

But do interesting plotlines develop and do some of the other characters start to grow in their own right?

I gave up on this one. It just got too weird for me.

Not too weird, just repetitive and directionless.

One character grows. Another character tries to grow. But the third and fourth seasons seemed to lose their way and became about Tommy having sex with many many hot women even though he's, well, Tommy.

I borrowed the DVDs for the first season and watched it completely. But I'm always at work when it's on, and everytime I managed to catch an episode, there was always a gay storyline going on. Then I think, "Is this all this show is about now."

I watched the series up through partway into season three but had to stop at some point prior to the season three finale. I quite enjoyed what I watched, though, and plan to revisit the series at some point. My father is a volunteer firefighter and loves the show.

I loved the first two seasons, but I gradually lost interest as the show went off into random territory. I also started noticing that consequences to major events were either non-existent or very minor and swept under the rug. An event like a character's death is milked for all it's worth (usually involving some top-notch acting, editing, direction, and music) when it happens, but very soon afterward usually becomes a non-issue.

The first two seasons are brilliant. And, if necessary, the tragic ending of season two is a good enough place to leave these characters (actually, it's a bad enough place to leave them--but it's also fitting).

The third season wandered a bit for my tastes, and stretched credibility with where it took most of the Gavin characters. And, ultimately, everything the season does with the firehouse guys doesn't go anywhere special or very new, either. That said, it's never unwatchable or bad--just not as good as the first two years.

I haven't seen season four yet. My local Blockbuster doesn't seem to want to carry it, and I've been to lazy to add another TV show to my online list and to cheap to buy it (I don't have any of the other seasons, and haven't heard good word of mouth about this one).

Thanks for the replies! It does seem like a premise that they couldn't get an unending number of stories out of...I'll watch it till it bores me.

Trivia... James McCaffrey, who plays Tommy's ghost cousin, is also the voice of Max Payne. He was also the star of Viper for its first and last season.
