Report: Discovery moving to Netflix

I think it would be more enticing to remove everything at the end of the contract, myself. I just got an email yesterday that The Office will be exclusive to Peacock on 1/1. That's a big deal. With everybody and their mom getting into the streaming business, this is going to be something that's bound to happen more and more.
I would imagine so, yes. The market has shifted and now there is direct competition for viewers via streaming services, and not just advertisers and viewers. It's a different market and I think the different players are going to hunting for that exclusive hook.

Admittedly, it makes me want to purchase all of Star Trek off of iTunes along with some of my other faves. I'm trying to step away from physical media purchases except in cases that I want to watch in super high quality. (And yes, @fireproof78 , I know we differ in opinions on video/audio quality for our content.) At the same time, and this is admittedly pretty pessimistic, I worry that with the future of movie theaters in question at the moment (I don't really think they're going anywhere, but it might look a little different), I wonder if they aren't going to pull licenses from those services. Corporations might start wanting to keep getting money from customers as opposed to being one and done.

There are a lot of shows which are much more popular than any Star Trek series. Interestingly, many are heavily serialised rather than episodic (Breaking Bad, The Wire, Game of Thrones).

Correlation does not equal causation.

You should really go back and read through the thread.

I could imagine them wanting to put the first season of DSC on Netflix as a "teaser", similar to how the first episode was broadcasted on TV, but I don't see why Netflix would pay to give a competitor free advertising.

Clearly, the website claiming this has confusion to promote.
They should promote confusion with this cool Jimi Hendrix song.

OK, I actually bothered to read the article in the OP. All it claims is there are some negotiations happening between CBS and Netflix. And this is at the end of the article:

Whether it’ll only be older episodes of Discovery, Picard, and possibly Lower Decks which will show up on Netflix, or whether they’ll actually get to air new ones when they’re released, remains to be seen. Netflix would obviously like new episodes, but CBS selling them the rights to those would probably mean they’re finally giving up on CBS All-Access as a going concern.

Which is basically what I said earlier. If they sell new episodes of their Star Trek shows to netflix then they may as well shut down CBS AA instead of rebranding it. I doubt if there are any negotiations either, so the article is probably just made up to get clicks.

No, shit, is it really already on Netflix in the UK? Because I feel were that the case it should already have been mentioned in this thread a few dozen times before now...

Its on Netflix in Europe, including UK. In Canada its on a broadcast network.

Putting earlier seasons on Netflix makes some sense. There's a few people I know curious about new Trek but don't want to get a whole new subscription just to see it. Making it easier for non-subscribers to do catchup viewing makes complete sense.

With the news that international distribution of Lower Decks is going to Prime, this pretty much shoots his rumour down. If there were more negotiations on going this would have more likely been part of the deal.

And? I am not sure what you mean by this post. The X-Files is a perfect example of a successful episodic show
The X-Files was a serialized show, just not as serialized as say, nuBSG or The Expanse. There was an overall arc story that was pushed forward a bit every season. The arc episodes were broken up by standalone episodes dispersed over the season. But each season began and ended with arc episodes. Buffy was serialized in the same way if you accept the story of the Hellmouth as the overall story arc.

True standalone shows generally don’t have overall story arcs.

But the main purpose of my post was to address your belief that sci fi shows were better served by standalone shows.
