Rene Auberjonois was terrible as Odo

That's right, I said it! Rene Auberjonois was a terible choice to play Odo!

I know, I know, blasphemy! How could I say that? He's such an awsome actor! Well, I agree that he's an awesome actor. He's one of the best.

That's the problem.

Odo isn't humanoid, he's a shaeshifter. In essence, every time Odo does something, he's acting. All those subtle things actors do, shouldn't have been done by Odo, all those subtle infltecions in his voice, all the tiny facical expressions. The look of nervousness when he heard about Kira and Shakaar, for instnace. Why would he look like that? shouldn't he be able to hide his emotions perfectly?

Odo would have best been played by someone with the acting skills of... oh, I don't know, Hana Hatae.

Rene Auberjonois would have been better in someone else's role. He's an swesome actor. You know what? He should have switched with Terry Farrell! She isn't a good actor!

lol i'm durnk

Oh you know what would have been cool? If there was a different actor for Odo in every episode! He's the only character who could they get away with that.

I have no idea what you are trying to say here...but, if you are by chance calling another poster 'stupid', I suggest you desist. ;)

He, like Seven on Voyager, was learning what it was to be human and experience human emotions, expressions, etc. Why shouldn't he have mimiced what those around him did

Seems like if it was an honest troll, it would be spelled a little more consistently. Or at least make sense. Or maybe that's its genius?

That's actually a good point. I'd never thought of it like that before.

Um, okay, so I was a little tipsy last night, but I still think it's a valid point I made.

Odo is trying to explore humanity, but not to the extent that Data or Seven are. And why would he be so good at mimicing humans? It's not like its in his nature or anything.

Being more "humanoid" (solid) smooths over the relationships. By adapting one's behaviour, even a bit to accomodate others is a standard way of bridging the gap. Prior to knowing about the Omarian Nebula he knew he was alone and unique. He wanted to belong, even if it was in some sort of arms-reach way, with those who surrounded him no matter how different he thought he was.

He was never trying to be human, or recapture his humanity, he was trying to learn and grow because he had no identity other than his work initially. I don't think he was ever meant to be "human" so much as "humanoid" and understand that they have passions and desires and friends and lovers. Sort of a "all the other species of the galaxy can't be so wrong".

In the end since he wasn't overcoming anything, and was simply forging an identity unlike Seven (recapturing what was lost) or Data (emulating his creator).

Well, he did study human behavior compulsively, to try to understand them better, and to fit in.

When I'm around a group of people for a different nationality long enough, I'll start to copy them a little. It's not intentional, but I'll find myself using the same inflections, speech patterns and mannerisms.

I could see Odo doing the same.

^ I can have that happen to me just in general manners, ways of speaking not just nationalities and accents.

It was a valid point. From a purely SF point of view, it makes perfect sense. Indeed, it's the main reason why I found the Odo/Kira relationship moronic. But...

...from a dramatic standpoint, an Odo who shows emotion just works better. Since Trek, freom TOS on, was always drama first, SF second, I'd have to say your ideas, while fascinating, are unworkable given what DS9 was trying to accomplish.

(Remember, too, that Changelings evolved from humanoids. Perhaps enough vestigial humanoidness remains in them that, when taking on humanoid form, they can easily express humanoid emotions.)

Nice to be shown some respect, though, isn't it?

You should see me after I've been watch a lot of Sopranos. It's quite something.

Ho! Where do you get your balls, you mezzo-mort? ( ;) )

All right, that tears it! I'm leading a campaign to deport drunken trolls from our fair kingdom! Who's on board with me??
:guffaw:

Noooo! I have a worker's pass!

I agree it works better dramatically, but still, an actor who wasn't as good at acting would have done a fine job.

You have to also note that Odo was raised by humanoids. He didn't just naturally get how to hide things like other changelings could. Throughout the entire show, when he was a changeling he couldn't do most of the things the other changelings could.

I think the acting was fine, because if they dumbed down the actor to far, then the audience would think it was just bad acting!! The only thing I didnt like about Odo was the Odo/Kira relationship. But even then I find that in some episodes it works well. Mostly not though.........
