He's not a kid anymore.

He's a lawyer.

In the words of one of the edits that came out at the time "I guess we're really screwed now".

He's not a lawyer yet, according to the article you linked.

Edit:

At least you've got the right video up now, though the other thing was pretty cool.

Originally I still had the video url from this thread in the buffer. I thought I'd copied the url of the SWK video but I hadn't, and didn't notice my error when I pasted it. I pasted, saw "www.youtube.blah blah blah" and clicked submit.

Heh, I had no idea he was Canadian, and looks like he's living where my Grandfather grew up, his father being the mayor at the time. The house he grew up in is now a safehouse in that town.

I remember the guys from b3ta or so raising a lot of money for him, but it going wrong somehow? Good to know he's alright I suppose.

Looks like he burned his right-cheek there on his saber.

Go for your Web Redemption, Star Wars kid!

I've never seen that video before, and I'm sorry I've had to see it now. What the fuck possessed that kid, not only to prance around like a fool with that stick, but to then fucking YouTube it??

He should be forced to show all his clients that video before they decide if they want him to represent them or not.

He didn't YouTube it, which was the issue at the time. Some other kids from his school found it and put it up. Someone on the Internet added Star Wards effects and it snowballed from there.

^ And the moral of the story is; if you're gonna make make an embarrassing video, don't be surprised if someone finds it and puts it on YouTube (or YouPorn, as the case may be).

He was a child. What this kind of thing proves is you shouldn't have any kind of fun just in case somebody films it and puts it on the Internet.

In case "somebody" films it?

Err, no. It's pretty fuckin clear that he was filming it himself. And while my comments are mostly sarcasic and tongue-in-cheek (11 years here, and a Charlie Brooker avatar, and some people still don't get it), the point still stands; if you're gonna film yourself acting the fool, then don't be too surprised if said film ends up making an unexpected screening. Especially these days.

I don't get why people post stuff like this. The thread title is "Star Wars Kid" , we're on a Trek BBS...everything on this whole site deserves this kind of response.
I guess that's how you get to be an admiral, posting like that.

What, are you Checkmate now ? I wasn't making a personal comment.

But it's still the case that people shouldn't have to be scared of somebody taking something private and putting it on the Internet.

Admittedly, some people bring it upon themselves by not understanding that Facebook, for instance, doesn't give a crap about your privacy, but still people should have a simple filter - did you ask everyone involved ? No ? Then it doesn't go on Internet.

It should be noted that the families of the other kids who put the original video on the Internet in the first place all settled out of court with this kid's family.

I don't get what you mean. I didn't think you were making a personal comment.

Who said anything about being scared? I'm not saying people shouldn't "have fun", or film private things for fear of it ending up on the internet. All I'm saying is, if you're gonna do it, in the modern world of instant video uploads, YouTube, Facebook...etc, don't be surprised if it does end up on the internet.

Hell, years before the internet was even a thing, how many stories went around about peoples "private" tapes being accidentally returned to the video shop, or accidentally being watched by their kids and their friends?

It's just easier for your private shit to become public now. But that's down to your own security. If you leave stuff where it can be found by prying eyes, then expect it to be found.

Sorry, I guess this part threw me:

Sure, but in my view it shows a lack of class and responsibility to take something that you know will embarrass another person and put it on the Internet without their permission.

The fact that they added special effects to it just made it even less defensible.
