The lady who was Dudley Moore's perfect "10" is just as lovely as ever and is volunteering her time and presence to help a Memorial Day Fund Raiser for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation in Solvang, CA.
Actress Bo Derek is serving as honorary Chairperson for “A Tribute to our Troops” memorial fundraising event and barbecue, May 23, at the Solvang Veteran’s Memorial Building honoring military Special Operators who lost their lives in combat or training operations. Proceeds from the fundraising event will benefit the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, (www.specialops.org) a non-profit organization that provides college educations to the surviving children of fallen special operations personnel.
This is the 2nd annual memorial event honoring military personnel who have lost their lives serving their country. Last year’s event was called “The Derek Argel Memorial Barbecue” in memory of Capt. Derek Argel, an Air Force combat controller who lost his life in Iraq in 2005 and left behind a 3-year old son, Logan. Derek’s mother and event organizer Debbie Argel-Bastian says this year’s event has a broader focus.
“This year our fundraiser is called a ‘Tribute to our Troops.’ We have lost two more soldiers from our area so I know Derek would not want me to single out his name.”
In addition to paying tribute to military troops, those who have served in the past, those who are currently serving, and those who have paid the utlimate sacrifice, the fundraiser will raise funds for the top-rated Special Operations Warrior Foundation and its programs to support Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel. The foundation provides immediate financial assistance to severely wounded special operations personnel so their loved ones can travel to the hospital and be bedside during their recovery. The foundation also provides full college educations to the surviving children of fallen warriors. Funding includes tuition, books, fees, room and board, as well as a computer and printer.
The fundraiser will be held May 23rd from 11 am to 5 pm with live and silent auctions, music and military displays. Tickets are are $20 and can be purchased at the door. If you are unable to attend, but would like to show your support for the troops and their sacrifices, you can make a donation online at ww.firstgiving.com/debbieargel.
Debbie says Bo Derek is planning to attend and they are still looking for volunteers as well as raffle and auction items.
