remastered..THUMBS DOWN

I finally got to see BALANCE OF TERROR remastered, via XBOX360 download, and I have to say? I was not impressed. Oh, the colors were great..but the new FX? They were too cartoony. I think the original FX, to me, were better and, gasp, more realistic looking with a few exceptions..

So, other than the improved color I have to say the remastered FX were not worth the cost..which was actually cheap...but still!!!

Welcome to the shitstorm. I agree with ya about the cg crapfx, but there aren't many others who do ...

(wasn't the part where the nuke goes off and the bridge goes all black except for the blinkers really dynamite looking?)

What do you expect from a generation raised on...Mario Brothers???

CGI still has a long way to go to beat miniatures in my book. Not to mention I'm in the "don't give the Mona Lisa a sheist-eating grin" group.

I'm worn out from the other thread on this topic that has recently run its course.

Whatever you guys say.

Balance of Terror was one of if not the first one done. Even TPTB and CBS Digital have said they wanted to go back and do it better. I would urge anyone to look at episodes like Space Seed Amok Time and Doomsday Machine, to see TOS-R at its best. The project was uneven, we all know that, even the producers themselves would admit that, so don't judge the whole project by a handful of episodes.

Oddly enough, I really did give them a try and Doomsday Machine was the one that closed door for me (IMO, the CGI made Kirk look like an idiot when they approached the Constellation. As close as the CGI made the ship look, it added far too much "Duh Factor" to "She was attacked!" for my hero worshipping taste *grin*).

However, I do think the remasters are all a personal call that each fan must and will make for themselves. No convincing from either side will work.

While I don't like them, I understand the reasons for them, and hope they work on younger generations. More so, since I bought the DVD's with the original effects, so I am gauranteed to be able to see the version I want. (double the bonus for me, as I REALLY don't understand how anyone can stand to see any version of TOS on TV due to syndication cuts).

^Ya, I thought so. I too was dissapointed by the early ones, but they really stepped it up later in the run. Not perfect, especially the camera angles that were chosen, but a fine effort. In my opinion the team didn't go far enough in what they could have done to spice up some of the eps.

I will make a deal with you, gentlemen. If you send me the remasters, I will use them. I have a hole in the wall that needs patching. Also send some tape.

Much agreed. And I HATED the obvious plating detail on the BoP.

Mind you BoT was one of the earlier efforts and the f/x improved markedly as they progressed. But with the exception of a few shots I think the new f/x (while looking fine in of themselves) still look somewhat "cartoony" and aesthetically jarring from the remaining live-action footage.

To quote Frank Herbert, "One does not beg the sun for mercy." The remastering is done, and it is a fact of Trekdom now. I did not want it, nor did I really like it, but it simply is.

True enough. I was for it too, at the start. I'm just making a point that I prefer the old version better.

And we still have the original version and we're completely free to ignore the revisionist version for the glorified fanfic that it is.

Raising this, now, almost two years after the first episode aired...

Didn't Billy say it best, "Get a Life!!"

Your stone knives and bearskins are in the outhouse.

And make screencaps for the purpose of making our own, right?

Actually, I didn't see it two years ago because I DO have a life. I just downloaded it from X360 last week and now, years later, I am vetting.

But thanks for the love...
