Remake SW New Hope!

Mr Light

Admiral
Admiral
So I was watching New Hope on TV just now, and I got to wondering how it could be modernized/improved if they did a hypothetical remake of the film. No Jar Jar jokes ;) Here's my thoughts:

--Opening Battle: more shooting between the Destroyer and the Tantive. Show Cpt Antilles in the bridge talking about their passenger and their cargo. Instead of Stormtroopers blasting a hole in the door, Vader makes his first appearance by cutting his red saber through the door then single-handedly cutting down the defenders. How bad ass would that be? And the troopers just kind of follow behind him. In fact I'd like to see Vader much faster and dangerous; I know as an injured iron lung cyborg he's supposed to be stiff, but wouldn't the robo parts make him super-humanly fast?

--New Galaxy-Level Scenes: when the Destroyer arrives in orbit of Tatooine, Jabba calls them up to protest the encroachment of his territory. Vader threatens him on the holo and Jabba relents.

We actually see Palpatine addressing the Galactic Senate, announcing their dismissal. Bail Organa protests it vehemently before high-tailing it back to Alderaan.

Palpatine orders Tarkin to destroy Alderaan first, knowing Leia and Bail are in the Rebellion. We actually see Bail on Alderaan when that horrible light fills the sky and everything goes white.

--No Luke/Leia kiss. Gross. :p In fact, they should instantly sense some connection between each other, like they've met before a long time ago.

--Obi-Wan vs. Vader: Obi-Wan isn't THAT old (in fact, Obi should be recast as someone 50ish anyway). We saw how well Dooku fought. This should be an amazingly fast duel, a slightly slower version of their original fight. And again, Vader should be a faster cyborg bad ass.

--The Battle of Yavin: We see the Rebel fleet of Transports and smaller destroyers, but they say they can't hope to fight the Death Star directly so they'll just cover the evacuation of the base. We see the Death Star has an escort fleet of Star Destroyers. It's still just the fighters against the Death Star, though. Vader senses "something familiar" about Luke in his X-Wing. Luke's magic bullet does NOT destroy the entire Death Star and make him a mass murder. Instead it just disables the reactor and strikes the entire thing dead in space. In the confusion, the Rebel fleet manages to slip past the Destroyers in a spectacular but brief running battle.

This is taken from an old idea I've said before, that there's only ONE Death Star. It gets disabled in New Hope, and is fixed in Jedi. Another idea I had was that the Death Star appears at Hoth and toasts the planet, to add further crunchtime to that battle.

George, is that you?

Seriously, why not remake Casablanca and Citizen Kane while you're at it...

Some movies _really_ don't need improvement, if you ask me.

I'm sorry if I'm being harsh here, but I doubt I'm alone in this opinion. ANH may have its flaws, but at this point even those flaws are classic, and remaking the film won't add anything of value.

I'm already remaking Citizen Kane. We've got Ashton Kutcher, Tom Welling, Chris Klein, Tara Reid, Freddie Prinze Jr., Misha Barton and Britney Spears lined up for the main cast, and Brett Ratner is directing.

Ebert:
Seeing the film the first time, I was swept away, and have remained swept ever since. Seeing this restored version, I tried to be more objective and noted that the gun battles on board the spaceships go on a bit too long; it is remarkable that the Empire marksmen never hit anyone important; and the fighter raid on the enemy ship now plays like the computer games it predicted.
I wouldn't mind seeing a very carefully fan-edited version of Adywan's New Hope Revisited that shortened the attack on the Death Star by a minute or two. It might not be an improvement, mind, but I'd be interested to see it. Otherwise, regarding the OP,
Amy Winehouse said:
No, no no.
:p

It's just a hypothetical :p Besides, I guarantee you that Star Wars will be remade within the next 25-50 years. It's inevitable. I just checked IMDB and Casablanca has already been remade in 1955, 1983, 1998, and 2002. Yikes!

^And yet, the original is still the one (most) people remember. Perhaps there's something to be learned from that.

This does highlight one of the major weaknesses of the prequels. The one thing that Lucas could have done is make the audience care about Alderaan. Instead of focusing on Naboo how about focusing on a world that we no will not survive the Empire.

I've been kinda thinking about an inner-city Star Wars where an adopted kid grows up to be a city hero like a revolutionary cop or school principal only to discover that his real father is some big time hood or drug dealer.

Don't joke like that.

Next thing you'll tell me is that some tv hack is remaking "Star Trek" HA! i'd like to see that happen.

I agree about making the lightsaber battle faster and more dynamic... but only to the level we saw in ESB and ROTJ. I wouldn't want all that crazy spinning around in circles and twirling of lightsabers we saw in the prequels.

Everything else I'd leave the same though.

The rest of your suggested changes, I don't really care all that much one way or another - some are kinda neat, but meh. But I will strongly agree with one, and disagree with one other.

The disagreement: Obi-Wan looks that old because he's been living in the middle of a frakking desert on a backwater planet for 18 years! Sir Alec was great, and Obi Wan aging a little prematurely just makes sense.

The agreement: Vader cutting through the hull with his lightsaber in the opening scenes would have been pretty awesome.

There is a scene in the novel with Luke and his friends on Tat, I think they shot some of that but it never made it to the final cut. I'd like to see that scene part of the movie.

and in the ROTJ remake its WOOKIES, NOT EWOKS, KASHYYYK NOT ENDOR, one original version i heard was that the wookies were enslaved and built the death-star

There was no indication that Jabba or the Hutts controlled Tatooine at the time of ANH. I got the sense it was nominally under Imperial jurisdiction, but there wasn't anything on that world to give a womp rat's ass about.

Luke as mass murderer never bothered me. The was no indication of civilians on the Death Star (or independant contractors). The Empire destroyed an entire world, murdered his "aunt and uncle", massacred jawas,..his old life was gone. "I'm from Anchorhead, and I say 'kill 'em all!" :p

Why would the Death Star need an escort? It was designed to annihilate captial ships as much as planets.

Vader does notice the "Force is strong with this one". Why spell it out?

Obi-Wan and Vader duel could be improved.

I'd make Jabba's henchmen more consistent with ROTJ (seems like they could've done that in 1996-1997), but no damn Boba cameo.

Let's recast the hell out of this sucker!

Leia: Alison Mack
Han: Michael Trucco
Obi-Wan: Edward Norton with a limey accent
