Religion and Star Trek

dude...just let it go...he doesn't get it...he'll never get it...he's a bigot w a gay man for his avatar...he doesn't get his own point
I haven't been around for much of the thread due to real life problems, but I just want him to understand how he reads to those of us outside of his religion, and likely a large number within as well.

I hope you're feeling better. I think he just doesn't get it.

Once someone is convinced faith in God will take care of everything, there's not much in the way of real world evidence that is going to sway them.

Never mind that if there is a God that created us, he made logic and curiosity at the heart of what we are. He/she/it gave me the tools to investigate and make decisions for myself. If I'm suppose to shun a group of people who are different than I am, people who aren't hurting me or anyone else, I want to know why? I hate the answer of just having faith.

Even so, I wasn't always the gorgeously handsome atheist you see before you today. ;)

Yep. He publicly came out in 2011. He is a strong supporter of the Trevor Project (an organization that helps prevent suicide and depression in LGBTQIA teens), and just a genuinely sweet, and kind, man.

Yes, that's really kind of him. If each of us took care of someone in distress the world would be a much better place.

I completely agree. I'm a firm believer in the golden rule, and I feel that if we truly made the effort to actually love someone, a friend, a neighbor, a complete stranger, we would make the world better.

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace." (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8)

Basically, both prayer and action have a time and a place. Prayer should always precede physical action, even if it's quick- "God help me!" ("Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." Romans 8:26) but only sometimes replace physical action if we cannot move.
