Regarding continuity: So... now what?

What should they do in regards to canon in the new universe?

These things are all... "fine." Simply just different looks and different mentailities.

I'm talking about HUGE changes in "canon" like the destruction of Vulcan, Kirk's early command, etc.
Depends on your definition. Why do you see those changes as 'huge'?

I mean: Vulcan was there. Now it's not. How can that be any kind of a big deal?

Vulcan is a major power in the Federation and home to billions. Now Vulcans are endagered, plus Spock's mother died even though she survived much longer.

Did Vulcan piss in your Cheerios some morning? You seem to take a lot of delight in it being gone.

Why? They could have made an awesome movie without completely disregarding established trek lore.

EVERY DAY someone posts on this board saying something like "episode/show X is rubbish as in an episode 40 years ago it was said Vulcans dont like waffles and a Vulan extra was seen eating waffles in episode X".

Fuck "the canon" right in the ass. I've loved Trek for years, heck I even quite like Enterprise, and I couldnt be happier that they have decided to concentrate on the SPIRIT of the show in the new film rather than the DETAIL. They pulled things out of their asses ALL THE TIME in the Original Series. and it is simply not necessary to rationalise Starfleet and UESPA, Starfleet sounds cooler, so they changed it on the show, no fuss, no mess.

I used 'Casino Royale' and 'Quantum of Solace' as examples of the kind of thing that Abrams and Co. have done for the ST franchise with their movie, but another good - and more closely relevant - example would be 'Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles'. Abrams and Co. left the door open for themselves to emulate TSCC and create their own continuity that is independent of the 'source continuity' from which they derivated, which is exactly what TSCC did.

Storytelling-wise it does not make much difference you know. Very few trek episodes have been set there. Much bigger changes have actually happened to the characters in this, times and dates wise, but who cares - it rocks!!

Actually, I was thinking of NuWho - even down the the last of the Time Lords: "I am a member of an endangered species".

Enough little nods to satisfy the diehard fans, but the underlying canon out the window.

 Nah, the survivors will resettle on another planet, likely calling it Vulcan (since that's the logical option) again and they'll be all fine in a decade or so.

I can give you a hug, if you want. :D

Well... wasn't amanda his sarek's first human wife... now he can get along to number two.... pick a young one and make a passal of little half human/vulcan kids...
after all.... it is logical now to have hugh family's.....

One sucky thing about nuTrek, despite my already enduring love for it, is the seeming likelihood that one has to BUY cocktails with cash or some system of credits.

I always loved Trek bar scenes, but even moreso knowing that nobody's cocktail would be "on me", even my own.

The future demands free drinks.

I feel the same way now as I did before I saw the movie. They can do whatever the fuck they want as long as it's cool.

Sure, they blew up Vulcan. But it was a cool sequence and has interesting implications for our characters, especially Spock. More than that, it was a good indication that JJ & Co. aren't going to let canon stand in the way of telling a good story.

Look, I'm as big a Trek fan as the rest of you and I get that same satisfied feeling when events tie together and it all makes sense from a continuity standpoint.

I just like the feeling of a good story more.

For what it's worth, as my grade shows, I loved this movie and will see it agan for sure (IMAX!). It just, for me, would've been much, much improved if parts of it made more sense and it fit in better with Trek Lore.

I can shrug and enjoy and accept it as a "new universe."

I just wish it was in the same universe -which it could've been with minor story changes that wouldn't greatly effect the movie.

I can give you a hug, if you want.

You can only hug me if you look anything like your avatar.

A few things:

I think that this new imagining of Trek is pretty good, it brings it to the new generation, and the things that bother me are not significant

Oh, and about how Kirk was promoted so fast.. remember, Pike had served with Kirk's father (so the new movie established), about 90% of the graduating class just got blown up by Nero, and besides Kirk, who else on board had even taken the exam to become a high ranking officer? For me, I see it as a different Starfleet. It was kind of 'sudden', but it was basically a field commission, I doubt Pike expected that Spock would go all wigged out and that Kirk would actually take over. Pike was just establishing a chain of command for his absence, which he probably expeced to last not too long. (Just saying). But, saving Earth usually makes poeple want to hand out awards. Besides, none of the other characters really reached in and took posts that they were unprepared for (McCoy was a doctor before he joined StarFleet, and was likely the highest trained medical person on staff, the others were the best in thier field, but didn't really need a 'rank' to do the job that they were doing).

Overall, I'm going to miss Vulcan, but I'm excited to see where this new universe goes next... maybe a new threat from that reigon of space, without the Romulan Empire to stand in the way...

Indeed. Always with this fucking canon nonsense! Maybe the sensible people on this board should make a vow that when someone brings up that c-word, the response will only be the two words "Shut up!"

They worked in TONS of classic Trek lore--then gave the series a whole new future to explore.

Brilliant!

As much as I am a fan of TNG and DS9, I'm okay with this "alternate reality." That timeline will still continue, but I think for the franchise to continue, you have to create new stories and not be so bound to the canon. I'm looking forward to what happens after this movie and how things will be different and yet the same.

I just want more star trek! New movie, old movie, tng,ds9,voyager, anything! And how about the cool warp drive sound effects?!? Like a shotgun! As far as the timeline goes, I think they will fix it in a sequel, or leave it the way it is based on the fan reaction and box office numbers. Don't make the transporter a stargate, though- distance should matter. Love the shuttlecraft! Love the special effects!

How would older Spock still being around necessitate a reset? It's not the same universe that he grew up in.

This Universe is Spock's new resting place, he will probably die in it of old age, and I think that is great!

They could always have a movie where they return Spock to his universe-time-line and they meet Captain Data(B4) and Picard and Riker etc.....

But I think the Universe of the new movie should be called "Spock's Universe" Or the "Spock-verse"

I think old spock should spend the next 80's years of his life helping to repopulate the Vulcan population, He deserves a break, Maybe in the next Movie Have young Spock visit him and old spock's got like 10 wives and a bunch of little children, and have old Spock make a joke about raising children is far more difficult than being a starfleet officer.

Or a crack about having multiple wives and spock says, "The number of surviving vulcan women outnumber the surviving vulcan males by 10 to 1, so this is only Logical"

What if they make Picard a hot blonde chick? :D

Or what if they keep to canon so strict that all future movies have a completely CGI cast? :D

The destruction of the Kelvin could have affected which sperm makes Picard, so it is possible.

If you were to knock on the window of the house you parents were copulating in at the time they were making you, you would reset too.
