References to the Prequel Trilogy?

Out of fun, and because of the shared disdain of the prequels, I wanted to see if I could count pure references in Ep. VII. There were certainly callbacks to the originals.

To note, I'm counting references as things that were created, revealed, or fleshed out during the Prequels. So the First Order officer saying they can dispatch clone troops would, to me, count as a reference to the Prequels because Ep. II was named after them and the clone troops played a large role in the PT; yes, Ep. IV mentioned the Clone Wars, but it was a throwaway line that didn't talk about the nature of the war or the nature of stormtroopers.

I counted only three:
-the aforementioned clone troops
-mention of the Senate, which made no appearances in the OT
-Maz Kanata's chronology of evil (paraphrased, "I have seen the Sith, and then the Empire, and now this")

Anything to add?

The senate was referred to several times in SWIV:ANH, with the connection to the Republic notably made in this line from Tarkin:

The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I've just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away.

Damn, though in my defense, we never actually *saw* the senate in ANH, whereas we saw its full glory in the PT, hence my mistake.

There were a few musical queues back to the PT.

They used the Force theme a few times and the ending was reminiscent to the one from Revenge Of The Sith but I don't otherwise recall a single theme from the prequels being used; Nor really all that many from the original trilogy either, for that matter.

They didn't use full themes, but there were a few recognizable bits that were only a few bars long that were from the prequels.

I think you can hear some of the younglings getting slaughtered by Anakin Skywalker as part of the saber "speaking" in the Force. Also I think you sort of hear Obi-wan in their prequel's duel. Basically the saber's history with the Skywalker family in a minute.

Are you sure this wasn't just your imagination? :vulcan:

I thought I heard Obi Wan too. Although I can't say it was that Ewan McGregor's Obi Wan? But I couldn't recall the line of dialogue if it had been recycled from a previous movie.

What was the planet the New Republic was on? Was it Coruscant?

I didn't catch Obi-Wan's voice, but I definitely heard children's voices, which I took to be echoes of Anakin slaughtering Younglings.

Thanks for the answer

Some planet in the Hosnian system, as I recall. Not Coruscant.

It bugs me that that planet's identity was so vague and otherwise irrelevant to the film.

Which makes me happy it wasn't Coruscant. That being said, I tend to agree.
I would have liked to see more about the New Republic before they blew it up (or, alternatively, less like they did with Alderaan).

Can we edit a spoiler tag in the thread title, btw? I edited my posts in spoilers to be careful and everything else in the thread so far is vague enough, but it wouldn't hurt.

If it had been - and had been clearly established as such -

Its destruction would have resonated a lot more with me. Alternatively, if we'd been attached to the planet by way of a character - Poe Darren proudly proclaiming it as his home planet, for example (e.g. Leia and Alderaan), that would also have given the moment a more emotional impact.

Was the planet system they blew up really supposed to be in the New Republic? Han could see it from where he was and the First Order got there pretty quickly...It seems like the Starkiller would be operating a bit further from there.

I'd add some spoiler tags if I were you.

That being said, while I tend to agree, in a world where a parsec is a measure of time, I'm going to assume something through hyperspace can be seen in real time regardless of the speed of light.
