Rediscovering Deep Space Nine

Antihero

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I loved the series when it first aired but that was many years ago and a lot of the episodes (especially from early in the series) are fuzzy.

I tried to get back into it watching re-runs on Spike but they kept bouncing it around on the schedule and so I lost track.

But I finally found a good deal (at Wal-Mart, no less, $40 each season) and bought the whole thing on DVD.

Looking forward to rediscovering the series and having some good discussion.

You're in for a treat. DS9 holds up really well, far better in fact than either TNG or Voyager.

I know I should start at the beginning and work my way forward but I've skipped around and watched a few of the more memorable episodes. (Blasphemy I know, but I could help myself).

And I must say, I'm amazed at how great the effects look. The battle scenes in "Tears of the Prophets" are ridiculously good.

I'm currently re-watching DS9 as well - together with TNG in the order they aired all those years ago.

So I'm halfway through TNG season 6 and DS9 season 1, and to my surprise I find DS9 to be vastly inferior. You see, DS9 is my favorite Trek and this is certainly not what I remember. I know it took them some time to find their voice, and by season 6 the TNG guys certainly had found theirs, but still!

I guess I'll see how Voyager holds up against DS9 when I start watching it as well during DS9's third season...

DS9 on DVD not only holds up well because of the special effects production value, but the DVDs also 'upscale' very well on an HDTV. Much better than most DVDs do.

The reason is that the DS9 DVDs are fairly sparse as far as extras, allowing the episodes themselves to spread out over a larger data area on the disc. Because of that, high video bit rates are achieved.

Monitoring the video bitrate with my Pioneer player, I find that it crosses 10mbps frequently during action sequences. Which is exceptionally high for a DVD. And because of that, it allows upscaling circuitry quite a bit of leeway.

In particular, 'What We Leave Behind' looks natively high-def when upscaled.

Yeah, I have a 46" plasma and it looks really good, much better than I thought. Although I find the black bars on the side to be distracting.

Im re watching by buying the DVD's box sets now. Up to Series three
"Fascination" Great Episode lots of fun. Im buying the Hard Box versions. Hunting the net for cheap season 4's as I type.

I should be getting mine delivered this week. I always loved DS9 but the prices for the original plastic boxed sets (£85.00 - Is this about $150.00?) was just silly money. Even when the slim packs came out they where £35.00. However, I've just got an absolute bargain from HMV.com. Region 2 for wait for it.

£17.99 (approx $30.00). The entire collection for £125.00 free packing (to the UK anyway).

Oh, happy days.

The same goes for Next Gen and Voyager.
