Data was in Blue, they made him Operation Officer rather than Science officer to change the color.

Heard that a few times before. Presumably Data would've been stuck at the back of the bridge set most of the time, or the wishbone railing would've been made a science console?

(Most causal viewers of TNG probably assumed that Data was the science officer anyway!)

Didn't the Ops position entail most of what the Science Officer did, plus some other things.

I thought Data served as both Ops and Science officer, because he didn't need to sleep and he was smart enough to handle a dual role. Maybe I am thinking of a novelverse book, because I recall now that Picard had to split Data's responsibilities amongst two officers after he was killed.
