Red Dwarf, this weekend

For some reason I miss the laugh track/audience reaction/whatever. I'm kind of disappointed that people seem to hate the new episodes... but I'll see how I feel when I finish getting through them.

Wow, after watching the second episode, I can see why the hate. The humour is just completely off for a Red Dwarf show.
They even stole a Leisure Suit Larry joke about the "missing" series that we don't know about... and the Blade Runner stuff? I guess the picture thing was kind of amusing, but it's almost as if I was watching a live action Family Guy.

Too bad, the first part was nice and felt kind of back at home.

I just hope I can fill in what I think is going on and why I dont think its shit.
To each their own. I get where you're coming from, but frankly I don't think it's even clever enough to warrant such an essay.

What it all boils down to for me is that it *wasn't* funny, and no matter how silly the series has been in the past, this brand of metaphysical, self referential "internal analysis" (if you like) very much smacks of scraping the barrel in the ideas department, and the Red Dwarf of old would never have stooped so low. It takes "winking at the camera" to the nth degree. It's shit. I just hope part 3 turns it around.

"It's like breaking the 9th wall, it's pointless."

I'm just so happy to see the Boys from the Dwarf back together (minus Holly, hard to give him/her enough material I guess).

It's weird without the reaction of an audience, but that's a minor niggle. Episode 1 is better than 2, mainly because of being set on the ship. I generally prefer the cabin fever of Lister & Rimmer winding each other up. I did find Dave crying over
Kochanski's
gravestone pretty powerful and a good choice to have Cat drop in at the moment.

I'm watching the marathons right now and the new episode is a nice bonus. I haven't been this into Red Dwarf in years... I was vaguely aware it was being repeated on Freeview, but never seemed to catch it.

Anyhow I plan on watching the omnibus on Monday... if that helps the ratings.

(I've skipped most of the posts after these, so sorry if this has been brought up).

I was thinking about that scene with Lister at the grave site when Cat dropped in... the scene before it showed that it was on some kind of bubble on the side of the ship, but the cat dropped in from directly above... which was just a glass window with nothing but space outside. Lapse of judgement?

After sleeping on it, and watching the Smeg Up's last night, I'm going to give this part one final chance. I know that Dave is going to meet up with his real self, and they'll probably meet up with Doug who'll say "Okay, we'll do a new series for you" and then it'll be announced on Dave that RD will pick up for a tenth series.

But is it really worth going though all this? Forcing the viewers to remember it's just a TV show. I mean, comon, we're not ignorant, and we're fully aware it's nothing more than a TV show. But you don't see Eastenders saying "Well, we're actually just a TV show, but we're gunna continue living our lives in this set as though it isn't."

But, I'm holding out for some sort of miricle, I'm seeing brief flashes of classic RD (very few and far between).

You know, I'd be happy if that at the end of the episode, Doug wakes up and we find out it's all a dream, and then he wants to write more, classic RD. Doubtful, but here's hoping.

Really, really not impressed with the second episode. For me the show has finally jumped the shark, hell they've gone past that, Red Dwarf has Nuke'd the Fridge. I could handle Rimmer leaving, Kochanski joining the crew, even Red Dwarf being in Lister's sock and the crew returning from the dead, but having them find out they are tv characters is just utter crap. If this is what was planned for the film no wonder no studio wanted to fund it.

QFT. I'm finding Back to Earth so poor, I'm actually tempted to watch series VII again to ease the pain. Awful, awful stuff.

The series should definitely be put to bed once and for all after tonight, and we can all forget this ever happened :p

I quite liked it because of the fact that it was Red Dwarf, and the I quite liked the whole scene with the comic shop owner. But some elements did feel a little lame, such as the obvious plug for the Dave channel, and also apparently series IX and X took place off screen.

Does anyone know why they didn't bring Kochanski back with the rest of them?

I mean, it's obvious they wanted to leave her alive as it turns out she merely ran off in a shuttle and Kryten lied to him about her death... which actually took away from the grave scene somewhat.

I suppose Chloe Annett might have retired from acting to raise a family or something, or is she meant to turn up at some point too?

To be fair, unlike the first episode, I did actually laugh once or twice. Such as the Sci Scanner bit
But overall it was pretty crap. The Blade Runner bits just got annoying after a while, and the plot was just terrible. I did laugh a lot during the bus scene with the kids, but only because it was so horrendous it was funny.
And was the episode sponsered by SFX or something, Jesus, just embarassing with its product placement

I'm interested to see how it'll wrap up for the final ep, but I tell you one thing- No way I'm buying that fucking (MASSIVE PLUG) DVD

The second episode in the new Red Dwarf trilogy lost over half the audience from the first episode but was still a huge success for multichannel station Dave. The show was the second most-watched multichannel programme of the day, with 937k (4.5%) tuning in at 9pm. Clip show Red Dwarf Special: Smeg-Ups followed with 495k (2.5%).

I guess that says it all, really.

The whole thing is just an elaborate commercial for itself on DVD.

It's like having a "buy it now" ad on television, so you buy it and you get a dvd of that "buy it now" advert.

Viewer count doesn't mean it was good viewing. The viewers didn't know what it was going to be until they saw it. So that figure in no way represents programme content, only viewer curiosity.

OK, well part 1 raised my expectations somewhat, so it was unfortunate when part 2 not only failed to meet those raised expectations, but also undershot the original low expectations by some way.

The whole show within a show contrivance is horribly self-indulgent, and really needs spectacularly good writing and performances to pull it off, which they don't have. Doug Naylor should just forget about writing it himself, a small team of younger writers who were fans of the original would do a much better job of penning a series.

Mind you, losing half it's viewers from one night to the next isn't a particularly good sign, those viewers were reacting to the first episode, the impact of the second remains to be seen.

I've been a Red Dwarf fan for fifteen years and I am absolutely loving these, sure them coming out a TV is a bit wank, but it is making me laugh, which this show hasn't done at all for a very long time.

and for the record, Red Dwarf jumped the shark when Starbug blew up at the end of series 6.

I'm still hoping they pull something out of the bag at the end that makes it all work. Because in my opinion at least, it was funny last night.

Bits of it were, although I thought the salesman in the TV shop who hated scifi and the little kid were funnier than any of the cast's lines.
