Red Dwarf, this weekend

According to Robert Llewellyn's twitter feed, reaction to episode 2 has been "mostly positive". :wtf:

Maybe I should just stop watching TV. As much as I want to love some shows, I can't help hating them even when other people tell me they're good. Should I be seeing a shrink? What the fuck is going on? Or is it just that some people would enjoy 3 hours of certain actors squeezing out turds if it was packaged together under a familiar logo?
I tend to find that discussing shows on the internet puts me off them. Regardless of whether I actually like them or not. Maybe the internet is getting to you?

I think I just let my expectations get the better of me. Plus, not every show can be a Jericho or a B5 (or a Blackadder). :(

Mind you, that's almost like making the argument that any old shit can be enjoyed if you adjust your standards accordingly. I'd rather have nothing to watch than "make do" with tripe.

To be honest, I think that certain TV shows have set the bar that high that pretty much anything else seems rubbish by comparison. You kinda have to reset your expectations every week or you come to expect too much. It seems like a lot of people here grade shows compared to the best shows out there, and if you do that then nothing measures up.
It's like reading the best book you ever read, then been disappointed with everything you ever read after that because nothing seems to match that one book. If everything is the best, then everything is mediocre.
I try to take each show, book, film on it's own merit, but I still end up being disappointed in practically everything that doesn't make it on to my favourites list.

It is said that sci-fi comedy is the hardest to get right. Back when red dwarf was first on the drawing boards, they struggled to get funding because the television producers thought the whole concept of sci-fi comedy a was fatal recipe. They'd been proven right on that many times before.

Red dwarf got it right, it established itself, and found it's peak around s4-5. s6 was ok, but it was starting to look overripe with overconfident acting.

It was only because of the history that series 7-8 happened. In themselves, had they been the first red dwarf we'd seen, it would have been tragic.

This latest offering is much like that. The only credit it's getting is because established fans want something. But in itself it is really poor television; it is exactly what tv producers are afraid of with comedy sci-fi. They're right about it being high risk -- it's not a formula you can be reckless with, or cheaply imitate, and get away with it.

Well Jim, going back to your first post on the subject.

...And Doctor Who was a bit naff too. Bah.

It's nice to see we agree on something. ;)

They've taken what was once a brilliant character driven comedy and turned it into a load of self referential, up its own arse meta-humour bollocks (because THAT'S oh so very original and clever) - then, inexplicably and for no good reason, it's now a fucking straight up, so obvious IT NAME DROPS THE SOURCE MATERIAL parody of Blade Runner. What the hell is this? It isn't Red Dwarf. Part 1 *was*, imho. What the fuck happened? Did someone slip some LSD into Doug Naylor's tea once he'd finished writing the first 20 pages?

Well, im not going to say its the best Dwarf that's ever been made (I'll let the Cast toot their own horn on that one) but its hardly up its own ass. Hell, the entire premise of it is tongue in cheek. It's a comeback which asks and answers its own questions as a show - Why the hell did we get dumped 10 years ago? What have we become? Do we have a shot at redemption?

If I wanted to shoot some A Level Media at it, You could (probably) say that each part is (probably going to be) an analysis of the show itself. The first part was its history, two guys, sitting around tormenting each other for laughs which as you pointed out feels like Red Dwarf.

This second part is the show in its "current" (Yes, im fully aware the show is "back" but bare with me on this) state as being a cancelled Television show, with the creators (in this case living through the characters) wondering why their show has been cancelled, was it their fault, can they find a way back to how they were when they were so successful?

Going on this, Im willing to bet tomorrow's third part will be the show finding itself and shaking itself down for answers (in this case, The Characters finding Doug Naylor and begging him to write some more episodes, with Doug Naylor himself being the big bad network which cancelled them in the beginning) and eventually going back to the way it was (Mind wipe, big huge reset button BUT with a strong potential for a new in-universe series) and redeeming itself in the eyes of the characters and literally the fans as were shown in this episode.

Of course, you could throw that analytical bullshit aside and laugh at the Viagra jokes and Blade Runner pisstake which, regardless of how you put it was Character driven considering the situation the characters are in. Hell, Rimmer spent alot of time enjoying the fact he doesnt really exist and thus isnt really a self centered smeghead, something the character of Rimmer would do. Lister spent the whole time trying to just survive in his own unique take it at face value way (for example going to the toilet) and then pining over his lost girlfriend (who in Series 7 and 8 spent ALOT of time trying to win over). Kryten was a twisted mechanoid wondering what happens at this time in time, and Cat was just a fashion centric Cat. Ya know, how theyve always been. We havent gone on some Heroes esque idiot plot where the characters act dumb to suit the plot, the Characters have always been Dumb and just happen to find themselves in a bizzare plot.

And after all that Im going to have some beer, christ knows ive earned some. ;)

Oh, and I'd just like to say, No hard feelings eh? I know it looks like ive spent an essay betlittling your opinions, but hey, its all my opinions too, I dont intend to change your mind, I just hope I can fill in what I think is going on and why I dont think its shit. Kinda futile I know but Ive spent all this time writing it so god knows Im gonna make you spend all this time reading it. :p

Peace.

I really do think this show has suffered from being aired in 3 ridiculously short segments. I feel (hope) that tomorrow after everyone has seen the story as a whole, we can come to a fairer conclusion, thus rendering this entire discussion pointless!

Wait a minute....:wtf:

Oh well.

I should watch blade runner one day.
I fell to sleep... or tuned out, all I remember is that I don't remember much of it.
I am really bad at film references in TV shows. I have never seen the classics like god father, full metal jacket and apocalypse now.
I am such bad geek:(
I have the sneaking suspicion I've seen them all, and couldn't care less about any of them, because I remember sod all about them.

I'm just so happy to see the Boys from the Dwarf back together (minus Holly, hard to give him/her enough material I guess).

It's weird without the reaction of an audience, but that's a minor niggle. Episode 1 is better than 2, mainly because of being set on the ship. I generally prefer the cabin fever of Lister & Rimmer winding each other up. I did find Dave crying over
Kochanski's
gravestone pretty powerful and a good choice to have Cat drop in at the moment.

I'm watching the marathons right now and the new episode is a nice bonus. I haven't been this into Red Dwarf in years... I was vaguely aware it was being repeated on Freeview, but never seemed to catch it.

Anyhow I plan on watching the omnibus on Monday... if that helps the ratings.

So how is this going to end tomorrow?

How do they get back?
Why is series 9 not going to happen but series 10 is?
How is Lister's alter ego in coronation st going to affect things?

Something about coronation st also being fictional? Perhaps they do a permanent role swap?

In the visited reality, they sci-fi shop guy did say that s9 had happened, so I'm thinking they're not going to go back are they? otherwise s9 would happen for us. s10 is going to be the characters going to live in that fan's house isn't it? and pretending it's for real? :wtf: I hope not!

Strange story but atleast this episode made me laugh which is more than can be said of the previous 2 series. Much better than part 1.

Very much a riff on The League of Gentlemen movie, but still made me laugh.

I'm still waiting for part 3 before I give my full mark, but its a tentative B+ at the moment.

Dude seriously Blade Runner is amazing, in the respect that it set a precedent for many things to come, I think it was even popularized cyberpunk, though I'm thinking that off the top of my head. In any case youtube it and see what you can find, it is literally one of the best sf movies ever.

You know that's one thing I picked up on, it was kind of an elegiac homage to its own history, which I thought was pretty good. But we'll see how it all ends, if the ending has some depth, I'll take it for what its worth, if not, then it will suck majorly.

I pissed myself at the "Zoom in, flip it, find a rain drop, zoom in" stuff. And thought him shoving Katerina in front of the car was funny. I did think it was better than the first part... but still not classic Dwarf.

I groaned out loud when Rimmer started doing the 'enhance the photograph routine'... and when it got sent up rotten by the multiple reflections, I was air-punching!
Quite like the Pirandello-esque twist, but hope it leads somewhere (other than an excuse for shooting it cheaply).

Hah, I remember this show. This sci-fi nerd I knew let me borrow the video. He said, "Here, watch this." And I felt like I had to even though I didn't care for it!!!

BTW, I didn't think he was a nerd 'cause he liked this show. He was a nerd because he was a nerd.
