Red Dwarf, this weekend

You see, Bob is completely right. It's nice to see the cast back together after such a long period, regardless of the story.

I have to disagree guys. It's rather not see them, or see them doing something else entirely than see the broken corpse of a once great show being fitted with puppet strings and smeared with shit.

It's when things go self-referential to the point of metaphysical self-parody (in any show) that things have gone too far and sugests that the ideas have dried up. The whole "our history of the TV show is part of the show" really is the last resort of any writer of any genre, and is something that really ought to be avoided by any writer worth their sodium chloride.
I don't know, Supernatural seemed to handle meta very well in the last episode. But it was a part of the ongoing story, not a "Everything that happened was fictional" type story.
I think there are times it can work, but it seems like Doug Naylor's well has been running low for a while, and this being the first thing they did was a bit stupid.

^^^ oh yeah, I grimaced and put my head in my hands when Dave was mentioned. I mean... just why?

It's the classic tale of a script writer who's well past their prime, who refuses to believe anyone else can command their creation better than they. Out of the limelight for 10 years, depression takes its toll, and distorts their sense of humor. Then they're laughing at their own random mind-wandering thoughts, and believing they'll actually look good on film.

Holy Shit.

Am I the only person who liked this second part? The reaction here seems to be if the cast took a collective shat on their faces and rubbed it in. Literally.

I happened to laugh a fair few times at this, Kryten's "Analysis" of the stuck up Sales clerk was spot on. Their trip to the DVD store was pretty funny too - "They were made obsolete by the standard we use. Videos? Yes, Over 2 Trillion DVD's were lost within 20 years, but a standard Video Tape is just, well too big to loose." Im liking the Blade runner homage and Rimmer's disposal of Katerina was pretty funny too. Even though the story is something out of League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse, given the craziness that is Quantum Mechanic's and String Theory and the like, whos to say something like this isnt actually possible (however crazy ;))?

I can overlook the blatant product placement (they have to pay for it all somehow, contrary to looks, this was really low budget. All the Special effects were done for free by Fans from all over the world (and they were pretty damn good if you ask me, better than some of Doctor Who's piss poor attempts, and to think they pay shitloads of money for them as well), Craig Charles' blog on Dave.com seems to suggest they didnt pay the actors for anything outside of just appearing in it, so considering the barebones values theyve done a bang up job.

Lets hope Part 3 doesnt get bogged down in Corination Street In jokes and keeps the story running smoothly.

As I said, I'm willing to see where this story goes before judging it too harshly. But I can see where you're coming from.

2 things summing up Red Dwarf atm; WTF!?!?!?!?! And dissapearing up its own black hole. Literally this is the raping of Dwarf.

Seriously fourth wall plots are used when you don't have any good ideas. They rarely if ever work, I mean Last Action Hero, regardless of the nostalgia factor is terrible. This was worse than Stephen Kings ego trip in DT.

As much as I'm disliking the meta-ness, I do agree with a lot of what you said here.

That's where I was last night, and I guess I'm still going reserve ultimate judgement until we've seen the last part but honestly, tonight's really blew it. Tomorrow's is going to have to do something amazing to rescue this and considering the very last shot featured our heroes pulling into Coronation Street - undoubtedly setting up yet more absurd meta-humour - my hopes aren't exactly very high of such a rescue being on the way.

Just got a text from a mate who thinks I (verbatim) "wasn't watching it properly". Presumably I'm supposed to have Doug Naylor's cock down my throat while doing so?

You know, at this point I'm wondering if the fact it's Red Dwarf is a help or hinderance.
I mean am I going easy on it because of my love of Red Dwarf, or judging it more harshly because I expect better of Red Dwarf.
I am loving some of the jokes, and I'd say over all I'm enjoying it. On the other hand meta-bollocks is bugging me, and it's just not Dwarf at it's best.

I wonder if people had the same reaction to the First Contact Trailer which had Zephram Cochrane saying "You people, your all Astronauts on...Some kind of Star Trek?"

That did make me groan, and it did pull me out of it a little, because honestly would say something like that? On the other hand, someone would say they watch Red Dwarf on Dave, but it still seemed like a bullshit conversation...

To be fair though, it's not like Picard & Co went to a comic shop and got their scripts signed by Rick Berman.

They didn't? What was I watching then?

Well, Picard and Co spent their time exploring the unknown, saving humanity on a regular basis and pushing the boundaries of human knowledge.

Lister and Co spent their time getting berated by a Toaster, Attacked by Curry Monsters and ending up in a Backwards Universe where poop goes back up your bum.

I wouldnt say Red Dwarf is an example of Science Fiction with Integrity...

Edited to add: Well, It has the Integrity of a show which is designed to make people laugh (it was forever designed to be, made as and is a Sitcom) and If a show ends up in a situation which is inherently comedic, doesnt that fulfil its purpose?

According to Robert Llewellyn's twitter feed, reaction to episode 2 has been "mostly positive". :wtf:

Maybe I should just stop watching TV. As much as I want to love some shows, I can't help hating them even when other people tell me they're good. Should I be seeing a shrink? What the fuck is going on? Or is it just that some people would enjoy 3 hours of certain actors squeezing out turds if it was packaged together under a familiar logo?

Lister and Co spent their time getting berated by a Toaster, Attacked by Curry Monsters and ending up in a Backwards Universe where poop goes back up your bum.

And while they were doing so it was a much cleverer and funnier show than the shameless self parodical nonsense that was broadcast tonight.

I wouldnt say Red Dwarf is an example of Science Fiction with Integrity...

I wouldn't say Star Trek is either.
