Red Dwarf, this weekend

WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT SHIT?

The only good bit was when Rimmer pushed the other hologram in the path of a car. To be honest, that was shockingly bad and very predictable.

I pissed myself at the "Zoom in, flip it, find a rain drop, zoom in" stuff. And thought him shoving Katerina in front of the car was funny. I did think it was better than the first part... but still not classic Dwarf.

It had more jokes in this part but i think show has jumped the shark or nuke the fridge has my brother Say's.

It wasn't even close to classic RD, I mean, for fuck sake, why even bother making an episode where

we find out that Red Dwarf is really just a TV show and nothing in the whole series' of Red Dwarf matter anymore.

By the way, didn't someone say there was ten series? But there was only nine... maybe that was a cheap way of saying that they're going to be filming a series ten.

God, I hope theres none of that shit CGI we've seen seeing.

They said 10 in the reality they went to, but there was only 8 in reality.
I'm willing to see how this all plays out before I judge the story. But I see what you're saying. But really what difference does it matter to us, I mean it is a TV show to us.

Horrendous. Absolutely horrendous. What is this? It's not Red Dwarf, it's something horrible.

The geek in me, the geek who used to save up three weeks of his pocket money at a time to buy Red Dwarf videos from a long-bankrupt high street gaming store, is dying a slow, painful death.

A disgrace.

I'm not convinced we won't see a Back to Reality style ending. But that was just... I did laugh more at this one than last night's, but...

Basically, what the hell were they smoking to do this? And this was the MOVIE'S plan?! Lovett and Annett should be glad not to be involved. I'm trying not to hate it and think of it as a fun tribute/special but it's harder now.

If they had done this as a one-off episode then it might have been better, but this is something which people having been waiting for over a decade and this is not what anybody wanted. I'll watch the third part and see if it makes any sense after that, but right now I'm thinking this was a huge wasted opportunity. :(

I keep thinking that they're trying to set up 'chanski's return though, with that dreadful scene with the children on the bus.

"Hey, I'm gunna call you by your stage name, even though I'm blatently old enough to know the difference between Craig Charles and Dave Lister."

I also louthed the Dave (TV channel) references.

What happened? Have I jumped into a remake of "The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse" all of a sudden?

This middle section does not bode well for the conclusion. Although Rimmer's disposal of Katerina was still well executed, as well as the laborious picture-zoom scene - both wouldn't be out of place from the original series.

Overall an unwelcome step back from the promising benefit-of-doubt first part. I'm still hoping part 3 will rescue the story.

**MILD SPOILER BELOW**

That was fucking shite.

They've taken what was once a brilliant character driven comedy and turned it into a load of self referential, up its own arse meta-humour bollocks (because THAT'S oh so very original and clever) - then, inexplicably and for no good reason, it's now a fucking straight up, so obvious IT NAME DROPS THE SOURCE MATERIAL parody of Blade Runner. What the hell is this? It isn't Red Dwarf. Part 1 *was*, imho. What the fuck happened? Did someone slip some LSD into Doug Naylor's tea once he'd finished writing the first 20 pages?

This is possibly the most bizarre (and most spectacular) jumping of the proverbial shark I've ever seen. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if they made ajoke about jumping a shark or even featured an actual shark jumping - they've already thrown subtlety into the garbage disposal unit.

To add insult to injury, it wasn't even particularly funny.

Utter utter utter utter utter utter crap. And Doctor Who was a bit naff too. Bah.

I can understand the dislike for the story. I have to admit I'm kinda thinking "WTF were they thinking?" but honestly I'm rather enjoying the seeing them on screen again, regardless of the story.

I don't think this was the plan for the movie. I think he's still hoping to get off the ground with that, this is something else.

If the final part is Series 7 quality (:() it would be a vast improvement on tonight's.

Gagh, I just can't believe it. It looked so promising yesterday.

It's when things go self-referential to the point of metaphysical self-parody (in any show) that things have gone too far and sugests that the ideas have dried up. The whole "our history of the TV show is part of the show" really is the last resort of any writer of any genre, and is something that really ought to be avoided by any writer worth their sodium chloride.

You see, Bob is completely right. It's nice to see the cast back together after such a long period, regardless of the story.

But the problem I'm having is that, I'm seeing all the cast, I'm just not seeing Red Dwarf. Get what I mean?

I'm watching Series 8 right now... watched series 7 last night, I can honestly say while there is a drop in quality I find a lot of enjoyable stuff in them. That said, there are parts of Back to Earth I'm enjoying. But I do agree with you about the Meta-bollocks. I would have preferred a straight up return to earth/fictional reality, rather than Red Dwarf being the fictional reality
