Red Dwarf, this weekend

You lucky British people.

First the whole good healthcare thing, and now this!

When does Part 2 air over there (i.e. Britain)?
Same time as today: 9pm BST, with part three at 9pm on Sunday.
If you only have one head, or even one video recorder, it's fair to say this is a frustrating weekend in the UK: there's Primeval and Doctor Who clashing on Saturday, Red Dwarf and Doctor Who Confidential clashing later on Saturday, Red Dwarf and Lewis clashing on Sunday... and that's before we mention the UK premieres of the American sci-fi imports (I think the Red Dwarf Making Of programme clashes with Heroes on Monday)!
Thank heavens for plus-one channels and DVRS...

Sat.

I'm genuinely confused about the absence of a laughter track. Surely during the editing process they thought "hang on a sec, this isn't funny at all without a laughter track." Its just so obvious.

Rough guess: You wouldn't have a laugh track on a film, and Doug Naylor is still hoping to make the film, and wants this to be a 'demo'.

People still watch Primeval?

It kills an hour while I eat my tea and wait for people to turn up for poker.

To be fair though, it did improve somewhat in S2, and S3 looks like it has some interesting stuff to come. I can think of worse things I could be doing for an hour on a Saturday evening.

I love Red Dwarf, it always has me in stitches. Even the last 2 series gave me a few laughs, even though the quality was not the same as the earlier series.
I did not laugh once with this new episode, the cgi was distracting and the whole episode felt cold. Anyone remember when Red Dwarf was a sitcom? Where's the funny banter gone, maybe Kochanski took it with her? Also what's up with that, Kochanski dead with no explanation, at least tell the audience why she's dead. Also did I blink and miss an explanation to where Holly's gone?
I just hope the next two episodes make up for this.

I'm beginning to get the impression that not mentioning Holly by name in the "Lister left the tap running" explaination is leaving some viewers confused.

You mean they didn't even mention Holly by name??

Did they actually say the words, "Kochanski is dead" or "Rimmer is a hologram again because..." ???

Did they actually say the words, "Kochanski is dead"...

No, they don't say it, but the fact that she's dead is revealed in a scene, we just don't know how she died. At least not yet.

...or "Rimmer is a hologram again because..." ???

There's a possibility that the reason Rimmer is a hologram again is contained in the Holly explaination (at a stretch), but no, no-one has mentioned directly why he's a hologram. Again, not so far.

I enjoyed it.

It wasn't as good as the glory days but it was fun enough... great to see the gang back together again. Everyone fell back in to the old roles without missing a beat.

If the reason why Holly is offline is also how both Kochanski and Rimmer died, then that means Lister's extreme negligence killed them.

When Rimmer described the event, I did think that might have been how he (and Kochanski) died.

Once they were in the diving bell with the Cat's typically outrageous purple suit (especially with the pistols) and Kryten with water wings it started working for me. I'm sure someone will edit in a laugh track on youtube or whatever but really we shouldn't need one to find something funny.

The diving bell was funny because of a) Rimmer's lack of interest, and b) the Cat's outrageous suit.

I wish they'd have slowed down a bit. I wanted to hear more than just a throwaway line from Rimmer about that second hologram. Why did NO ONE seem curious as to HOW or WHY a second hard light hologram suddenly, and without reason, materialized immediately after the squid dimension hopped?

I also think it is a little goofy to have one hologram say to the other that the main computer is offline. What exactly is running the holograms then? They've always been established as just software run by the computer...software that is so complex and perfect a replica of the human it is patterned after that the program REALLY, REALLY thinks it is the person... sentience and all...but the computer is still running it.

OK, that wasn't too bad. Was it Red Dwarf of old, no, was it better than any current comedy show I can think of? Yes.
Do you mean as in "airing at the moment" or just general sitcoms of the day?
As for the first, The Inbetweeners is fooking brilliant, and the latter the mighty Peep Show of course

I'll reserve judgement until we've seen it all, but it was a surprisingly decent opening I thought. A bit short on laughs and a few cringeworthy moments, but a damn sight better than series 7&8 which is all I was really hoping for.

But I have to wonder what you're smoking hereBob:

You've got to be kidding. Off the top of my head, the IT crowd and any episode of the brilliant Peep Show are astoundingly better comedies than this was. Beyond situation comedy, Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle and Newswipe have more and better punchlines.

Take away the emotional baggage of it being the latest, long awaited instalment of a cult classic and you'd be left with a pretty hollow shell.

I can only guess that you must have been thinking of some dreck like Horne and Corden... or, god forbid (gulp) Hyperdrive. Ugh. I feel ill just mentioning it. Well, at least it showed that piss stained pretender vaguely what a space based comedy is supposed to be like, grumblegrumble.

I meant currently airing sitcom-type show. The Inbetweeners I haven't watched yet. I saw an episode or two from series one but couldn't get in to it. I did buy series 1 in a recent sale and plan to try and give it a proper go.
Yes, Newswipe is funnier. Out of the episodes of Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle that have aired so far I would say only 2 episodes had more laughs than this, but then that's a stand up/sketch show, not sitcom-y.

I was slightly dissapointed, but there is more i havent seen yet, so i will save my opinions for later!!

Wow, apparently Part 1 brought in over 2 million viewers for Dave. Hopefully they'll all be back for parts 2 and 3.

To be honest, you should be watching The Inbetweeners. I was in the same boat as you for a long time, I glanced at an episode, I didn't like it, thought it was something else. Then I decided to watch an episode from series two and I was in stiches, so then I went and watched the whole of series one (only 6 episodes long though, which is annoying) and enjoyed every last one.
