Red Dwarf series 9 (or is it 10?) in 2012 confirmed by Craig Charles

Re: Red Dwarf series 9 (or is it 10?) in 2012 confirmed by Craig Charl

just caught up with this today and i have to say i'm pleasantly surprised with this series so far. its not perfect, but its better than the last few series.

I guess I'm odd, since I thought this was the first episode that was on par with the early series. Yes, I saw the ending a mile away, but I don't watch the series for originality.

The whole "Church of Judas" thing was probably my favorite bit.

Maybe I'm lighter on this show than others just because it's so good to have the ol' boys back. As long as there's a few yuks and nothing too egregious I'm having a good time watching these.

I enjoyed this one. Again, it totally felt like classic Red Dwarf, so it was comfortable like a pair of old jeans. Also like the previous 2, it wasn't tip top Red Dwarf, but very very solid. The reveal of what the cat ate was hilarous!

" Lister, have you given Jesus a vindaloo? ". That one is making me giggle every time I think of it. A classic line.

I'd agree with what most people have said, weakest one of the series so far, but it was still amusing, and the reveal of what Cat had eaten was hilarious!

Like Mark says, they should have had a throwaway comment about why Kryton couldn't just power the remote.

I'm really enjoying series X so far.

Can someone remind me where and when they are? Are they on Red Dwarf in their past but our future?

Re: Red Dwarf series 9 (or is it 10?) in 2012 confirmed by Craig Charl

Their present, our future. Apparently we see what happened after the end of VIII later this series.

How many episodes is series X going to have?

Re: Red Dwarf series 9 (or is it 10?) in 2012 confirmed by Craig Charl

6 episodes. The next 3 being Entangled, Dear Dave and The Beginning.

I guess I missed some details, but did the events of the previous few series (losing the Dwarf, reuniting with Kochanski, go back in time and get sent to the ships prison level, etc) already happen, not happen yet, never happen, or happen in an alternate reality?

They happened, as far as we know. It's basically 10 years later and Kochanski has "died" or run away. A water tank broke and flooded the computer deck so there's no Holly. That's basically all we know from BTE.

That seems to be a relatively short run. I know it started out doing six episodes, but didn't Series 7 and 8 have about 8 episode runs?

I bet it's due to the fact that Red Dwarf has been off the air (not counting BTE) for a good decade.

The fact that Dave has a smaller budget will play in to that too.

I guess it's a sign of the times when Dave has a smaller budget than what the BBC had back in the day, yet this series looks utterly fantastic compared to all the previous series.

*steadily growing older and crustier*

Well that was great!

Entangled is easily my favourite episode of this new series. Nice, easy banter between Rimmer & Lister, lots of story packed into the time, some good gags throughout and a fun ending. Plus, Professor Irene was cute, which never hurts.

Sure, if I was to quibble, I'd say there was a little too much homaging to past Red Dwarf glories i.e. Emohawk (the BEGS/GELF scene), Quarantine (Luck Virus vs Synchronicity Crystals) and DNA (the evolution beam, right down to the between legs camera angle IIRC; surely must have been a deliberate nod). I'd also question how Rimmer managed to walk right through the door in soft light mode; why didn't his light bee catch on the door? (but let's just say he used some other kind of holographic projection technology).

And it was missing one or two really big belly-laughs instead of just good chuckles. But overall, very good indeed and while Pree came close, I'd say this was the first ep of the series to fully feel totally like a "lost" episode of the original run of Red Dwarf. Not one of the all-time great eps, but certainly in the middle of the pack. Well done, lads. Now keep it up for the rest of the season.

That was good fun again, though the second episode is still my favourite of this run. (So far I'd rank them, best to worst, as 2, 1, 4, 3)

Re: Red Dwarf series 9 (or is it 10?) in 2012 confirmed by Craig Charl

That was arguably the best one so far and a vast improvement on last week.
