Screenwriter Carl Ellsworth has been hired to rewrite MGM's Red Dawn, the ultimate homeland invasion story about a new generation of besieged high schoolers...

"The tone is going to be very intense, very much keeping in mind the post-9/11 world that we're in," says Ellsworth, "As 'Red Dawn' scared the heck out of people in 1984, we feel that the world is kind of already filled with a lot of paranoia and unease, so why not scare the hell out of people again?"
So. What do you think?

You can't make Muslims bad guys in Hollywood, remember? Especially since there's no such thing. They'll have to be either white or Asian.

Who the heck's gonna invade the US this time? The evil Muslims of Cuba and Nicaragua?

Russia is messing around with Venezuela down there, and is threatening Europe with holding an oil embargo against them...

I could see how the current "board setup" of global political chess could be worked into a reworking of Red Dawn...

It would also explain why such a full blown invasion would be successful, because the US is tied up over seas fighting the "global war on terror". Why Europe doesn't get involved, why China would back the US in such a power play by Russia...

Overall, the current global political situation is far more feasible for the Red Dawn Situation to play out the way it did than the setting of the 1980's or even the 70's.

So Tom Welling in the Patrick Swayze role, Michael Cera in the Charlie Sheen role, Blake Lively in the Lea Thompson role and Kiefer Sutherland in the Powers Boothe role?

ugh

Red Dawn is a fun movie, and much, much more serious than people give it credit for. Everyone remembers the campy bits and the action happy first half, but always forget the extremely depressing second half. It's not a favorite, but a fun film.

Conan is another fun John Milius movie......

remakes tend to bug me:scream:

I think I'm going to remake Weekend at Bernie's II. Not the first one, but the sequel. And even though it's a stand-alone movie with new actors, it'll still be called Weekend at Bernie's II.

Don't see the point myself.

Some movies just don't really warrant remaking. I enjoyed Red Dawn, but have we really got to the point now with the lack of originality being thus that we're even starting to remake b-movies?

Personally, I don't know why you remake the good movies (even though I liked Sabrina, Ocean's Eleven, The Italian Job, etc.). Why not take all the bad movies out there that had potential and try to make them into good movies?

I enjoyed the original for what it was, but I'm not 100% sure how such a story will play out nowadays. I'd watch it at a matinee just to satisfy my curiosity more than actual interest.
