Red Blooded Spock??

I remember it as being green-tinged...

Yup, and the bruises on his face were greenish too. But I've only seen the movie 12 times, and only 6 of those were in IMAX.

I don't remember seeing any red blood on young Spock, although the greenish bruises made me want to kiss them and make them all better - that was one seriously adorable little boy.

Now - ADULT Spock, yes, in some tight close-ups you can see little red veins in the corner of his eyes...but alas, that's what you get when you have to cast a human actor - all the Vulcans turned down the role.

They probably wanted more money.

Green-blooded bastards.

^An Andorian actor would've done it for less then even the pinkskin actors, and with superior acting skills, but these racists didn't want to give him the job.

Does colorblindness run in your family? I'm not trying to be insulting - in most colorblindness, the most common trait is an inability to distinguish between certain shades of green and red, the two colors at stake here.

Thank you for asking, but no, there is no color blindness in the family. My son and his buddy both agree with me about the color of the blood. The guy a few rows in front kept yelling "focus" to the projectionist. I guess we should have been yelling "color".

The makeup used on Nimoy in all of TOS and the features - and even on characters such as Dr Selar on TNG - is a Max Factor blend created for TOS makeup artist, Fred Phillips. It's called LN1 (Leonard Nimoy 1). It's a yellowish/flesh colour, not green. If it ever appears green it's a trick of studio lighting and gels. The movies were lit quite differently to the way TOS was lit.

Werner Kepler (ST II) tried a few things differently for ST II but Nimoy is actually a stickler for keeping the Spock makeup true to the Phillips method.

Differences in lighting is also why Data appears whitish in TNG but goldish in the features. The different lighting pick up different aspects of the makup.

Cool, thanks for the info! I knew Nimoy was a stickler about keeping the ears right, but I didn't know about the other makeup. But yeah, now that I look at some screencaps again, there does seem to be a subtle yellowish hue there.

You just like being P.C. about Andorians...you forget how they took over professional blue-ball sporting years ago.

The other actors were scared of catching Andorian shingles.

"Wait'll you're sitting pretty with a case of Andorian shingles, see if you're still so relaxed when you're bleeding from your eye sockets..."

To be honest, looks can be a bit deceiving for those without keen eyesight. After looking at stills and at the movie (AGAIN), the green on the lip is semi-transparent green - but it's very green. In some lighting in that scene, when young Spock is in shadow, the cut on the lip looks dark and may be picking up a refelcetion from colored gells on the set lighting. But green it is.

Looking at the still production photo of bruised young Spock in the Star Trek mag, you can also see the blood is very greenand semi-transparent, not opaque. If you look at the blood of the Romulan guy who gets run through on the drill platform, note that his blood on the blade is semi-transparent green as well.

For IMAX viewing, the screen is SO large that I like to be near the back of the theater, whereas in a normal theater I'm usually in the middle at the furthest. I ldon't like craning my neck or moving my head side to side to see the whole screeen. But the sound is incredible in the IMAX presentation, and the 70mm print I saw was gorgeous - it's definitely my preferred way to see XI. The boom of the jump into light speed is amazing - it can be felt through the seat and floor!

But I HATE it when they cast Andorians as races that don't have antennas.

The skullcaps never properly fit over the antennas and so the hairpieces never sit right. And I've NEVER seen an Andorian in makeup where you couldn't tell they really had blue skin. I dunno. Maybe it's their eyes or something, but you can just tell.

Don't get me started about the ones with the antennas that emerge at about the forehead. Those guys can NEVER pass, no matter what they try.

Maybe as a Klingon, with the forehead ridges...

Look ma! No blue skin, no antennae!

You must have loved hearing McCoy say that...
Even more chilling: I got to see him perform that line in person a few weeks ago!

That must have been amazing!

^ I know I did. I was hoping for TOS/ENT references like that.
Me, too; I love ENT; and of course, TOS is my sentimental fave.

It's the only way to fly, IMO. I saw it about 15 times in IMAX; and after it left, I tried regular theaters, but they sure didn't provide the same buzz.

Spock's pinkness is really noticable in the turbo lift against Uhura's skin.

Er, for some values of really noticable since I 'd seen STXI at least a dozen times before I noticed it. But once I saw it, it's really obvious.

Yeah, I remember we already had a discussion about green skin tone, including red mucous membranes, about 15 minutes after the sneak preview was over. ;) It was inevitable.
