Recommendations?

You definitely want to check out post-finale material or original series. It's TrekLit at its best.

Some specific recommendations:

- The Destiny trilogy is the best TrekLit ever, in my opinion. You can just pick it up and read it, if you want; no prior reading is necessary. (A friend of mine who'd never seen Star Trek at all read it cold, and loved it.) http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Trek:_Destiny

- That said, if you DO want a little background on Destiny, you might want to read the first four Titan novels (http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Trek:_Titan), as that ship and crew is featured in the trilogy. The Enterprise-E post-Nemesis is also featured, but the novels preceding Destiny are a little harder to wholeheartedly recommend; they're pretty uneven. You might want to read Greater Than The Sum, the novel immediately preceding Destiny, as it sets up some elements of the trilogy and summarizes all the previous adventures nicely. If you want the rest of the novels between Nemesis and Destiny, read the list here: http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/TNG_relaunch

- There was already a post recommending the Lost Era - it's GREAT stuff. Fills in the history between TOS and TNG with style and creativity. All 10 of those books are awesome, except maybe Deny Thy Father, which is only worthwhile if you really like Riker. http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Trek:_The_Lost_Era

- Finally, my other personal recommendation is Star Trek: Vanguard. It's five books strong so far, and features an almost completely original cast on a space station set during the TOS era. It wraps around the events in TOS in amazingly beautiful ways, while upping the ante in terms of drama and creativity. It's a bit like TOS as reimagined by HBO. It's totally freaking awesome and everyone should read it. http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Trek:_Vanguard

You start in any of these four places (Destiny, Titan/TNG-relaunch, Lost Era, Vanguard) and you can't go wrong.

Agreed. Definitely one of my favorites now.

I just did this actually. I did not read any of the TNG relaunch novels, but I did read the first 4 Titan novels before hitting Destiny. I'm not sure I'd recommend it. There's really only one stand-out book in the first 4 Titan novels and that's Orion's Hounds. That said, it was useful to know a lot of the Titan characters before Destiny and I wish I would have hit Greater than the Sum before the Destiny trilogy to get to know some of the new Enterprise crew a bit better. I'll just have to go back to that at some other point, though. At any rate, I'd recommend it for the backstory knowledge, but not necessarily the quality of content.

After reading Destiny, I can't wait to get started on this, myself. Fair warning, the early Vanguard books are hard to find right now. Not sure if they're out of print or getting reprinted or what the story is, but I hit a lot of local bookstores before finally giving up and ordering them online. Just got the first one today - can't wait to start reading it if I get some free time this weekend!

I would like also like to suggest DEVIL IN THE SKY. An early DS9 book that is a sideways sequel to TOS's Devil in the Dark episode...

I just want to put in another vote for Vanguard, too. Truly, truly amazing stuff.
