Recommend me a Blu Ray player.

This saga comes to an end. I said "hell with it" and went out and bought one today. I got me a Sony model BDP-S590. I haven't touched the wireless yet, since I'll need my dads router password (he's out of town, at the moment), but I did watch a movie on it already.

My inaugural movie was Total Recall, and it looked great.

They should never have had regionality on DVD or BR players. Does it really matter where I buy my movie/TV show from. The studio still gets it cut.

It makes a big difference. With the prevalence of online shopping people are not bound to ordering from a single country anymore.

if the currency exchange is very favorable (in previous years US dollar vs Euro for example) it makes purchases quite cheap and you sometimes don't even have to pay shipping with some stores if you reach a certain limit.

So the studios introduced Regions to protect the markets.. a bit futile since almost immediately players were either able to play discs from any region or could be unlocked by entering certain codes.

Personally i'm also on the fence of buying a BR player.. i have a new flatscreen and it would be a shame not to use its potential fully.
Torn between a PS3 and a player in the same price range.. anyone know how the PS3 compares in quality/features to a purely BR player in the same price range (i know i can check for myself but i'm lazy ;))?

It's far easier to download firmware onto a stick and transfer it to the player that way than it is to use a wireless connection. Especially if you *don't* want your firmware updated.

Firmware updates are optional. If you have a 'net connection, your player won't apply the update without asking you first. You can decline.

PS3 is awesome. I bought mine when they first came out specifically because I needed a new DVD player, and I figured, why not get a Blu-Ray player that can also play video games if I want? I love my PS3, and I will very likely get a PS4 as soon as it gets released.
