It sounds like you're looking for a Jagerbomb.I'd like to find a drink that tastes good (without a strong alcohol flavor) and in moderation provides a pleasant sensation without sneaking up on me or making me hyper.

Drinks I have tried and what I thought of them:Well, it depends on your particular flavor likes, the situation you are consuming it under, and wild card factors.
Lets start with the first, what flavors do you like?
^Try floating a measure of Galliano on top of your screwdriver -now that's a nice drink!

Thanks to everyone for the advice. So far, it sounds like I may want to get a bottle of French champagne, a bottle of Captain Morgan, a 2-liter of Coke, and a 2-liter of RC (in case it turns out that I would prefer it with the rum, as I normally prefer RC to Coke), and experiment with those.

Lets start with the first, what flavors do you like?
Screwdriver - too strong with the flavor of alcohol
Pina Colada - The first one I had was made wrong - with vodka instead of rum - and again, the flavor of alcohol was too strong. I liked the other flavors, though, so since then I sometimes get Pina Colada mix and add ginger ale and drink it that way. I've tried a Bartles and James Pina Colada wine cooler, and again, there was an unpleasant flavor mixed in.
Strawberry Daquiri wine cooler - this, I actually know I like! But, I don't taste any of a flavor I identify with alcohol, so I worry about getting "snuck up on" like I mentioned in the OP, and don't drink them, save sharing a single bottle with my wife two or three times over the course of the last 17 years.
Peppermint Schnapps - refreshing like Listerine, and like Listerine, about a mouthful is more than enough, and then I don't want any more. Good flavor, but too strong, and when I say that I'm not sure if I mean the peppermint or the alcohol.
Inexpensive domestic beers - horse piss. Except - I had a couple of cups of Busch at a pool tournament my dad was in when I was in jr high. The beer was over a full cup of ice, and tasted watered down, to boot. That wasn't half bad.
Sam Adams Cherry Wheat - Why do they lie and say anything about a "cherry" flavor? Do they mean the wood, rather than the fruit? Horrid.
Korbel - We each had a swallow of this brand of red wine at a wedding reception about a decade ago, and I think I know what the "rotten fruit" taste that Maestro's wife is referring to is.
Zima - No. Just no. I'd be hard pressed to say what specifically is wrong with it - I think it may be more than one thing.
As to what flavors I like, well, a full list would take a while, but drinks that I have eyed as possibly appealing but haven't tried include Kahlua and a few other chocolate drinks, Appletini (if JD from Scrubs likes it, and he's supposed to be a huge wuss, then...), and Guinness, 'cause it seems like The Beer so maybe its better?...
I also sometimes make myself cafe mocha coffee and mix in caramel and peppermint syrups, and I've thought about substituting in peppermint schnapps, but I don't keep it on hand.

Isn't that a Harvey Wallbanger? OK, but I prefer regular Screwdrivers.
To the OP, of course it's perfectly possible to be a light, regular social drinker. If you're interested in finding drinks you like, dive straight in: either start wine-tasting or gradually work your way through the list of drinks in a local nice cocktail lounge. The structure of either approach will let you try a lot of drinks quickly, which is essential in figuring out what you like... and why. I think for a novice drinker, beer is a harder starting point as lots on the market tends to be bitter (as in tasting bitter, not necessarily being Bitter). There are some really great beers out there too, of course.
Personally, I really love wine but also enjoy many different cocktails and quite a few beers.
