Recommend a good RPG?

Are all the characters in your Trek game really high ranking but still implausibly serving on the same ship together, like the TOS crew in the later movies?
Not really. It's a big group (9 players as of now), and over the years some people left and new people joined: characters came and went, the officers got transferred to new ships as needed, so the cast is still within the normal rank range for an operative vessel.We also lost a couple of ships in combat, surviving only by the skin of our teeth: that was quite a blow to our careers.

Kegg would know better than me, since I don't play regular Cataan and only bought the Trek one cause I like Trek. But I'd count that as a vote of confidence. For anyone who might be interested in a bit of humor, you should check out the Order of the Stick webcomic. I'm trying to catch up at the moment. It's funny when certain rules don't make sense all the time...

The Yin look like they're on their last legs, and the Hacan are kicking ass.... no surprise for such a small board, of course. And I'm glad to see the Creuss and Nestphar getting in on the action.Bah, that sucks. Not as much the first part, but the second for sure, and makes the first even worse. Exile was a great character.
My theory is probably more petty than the truth, but I kind of feel like that happened because the Exile wasn't really BioWare's character. I'm more of a Revan fan than an Exile fan anyway, but still...not cool.
Basically. Drew Karphyshyn didn't seem to quite get what the Exile's hole in the force was about, to be honest. It is interesting that some of TOR's plot actually fits quite nicely with some of KOTOR2's hints and premonitions, though
Mostly that KOTOR2 spends a lot of time suggesting that the major wars like the Mandalorian/Republic War were all the result of some shadowy manipulation, ultimately suggested by Kreia to the the True Sith who Revan discovered pre-KOTOR... and the True Sith are essentially the Sith Emperor and his secret empire that is the predecessor of the playable evil faction in TOR.

Actually no, I just happened to play the Trek once and it was my first experience with Cataan but it was a really fun one. For the record the theme of Star Trek: Cataan is the TOS movie era and players use Constitution class starships and the Starbase from TSFS. The raider role is filled by a K'tinga Klingon ship. It's very balanced - just complicated enough to have in-depth strategies and not too complicated as to completely lose the player on their first play.
My impression is that JRPGs tend to live on the PS3 and the DS nowadays; I'm still (pleasantly) surprised that FF13/FF13-2 got 360 ports.
I like when I can get both of the Hacan Prosperity Spheres into action.

Heh. Way way back in the day, I bought the original TOS paper and pencil RPG. For my two friends I designed a killer dungeon/encounter. They took Kirk and Spock and four security guards. This encounter had several 'random party member dies, roll who bites it' traps.
Sure enough at the end, it was just Kirk and Spock.
The FASA game? Awesome. We still use a lot of their stuff in our game.
Yeah, the expense would probably be my main issue - $90 for the main game and $60 or so for each expansion? FF does nice gaming stuff, but that's a tad pricey for me. I did lol at one of the comments I saw on Board Game Geek, that the huge TI3 main box is great for fishing tackle.
Cosmic Encounter is similar in some respects, and less expensive for the main game and the three expansions. There are nearly a hundred races to choose from, and each race has its own unique ability. There's also a color code to represent how advanced the abilities are, so that newer players won't get stuck trying to use a more complicated ability that requires familiarity with the engine to be effective.
He's not alone in that regard. Hell, I don't think the writers of that game knew what it was about.
There are great JRPGs this generation, but they moved to portables. Console gaming in Japan is somewhat dying while the DS, 3DS, and PSP are selling like crack, so those systems are getting all the great Japanese games.
But yeah, if you want some great console JRPGs you're going to have to pick up either a PS2 or SNES. The PS3 has a few decent games, but nothing compared to either of those systems.
To the OP: Get your hands on a PS3 and pick up Valkyria Chronicles. While it's not a traditional RPG, it's still an excellent game.
I've also heard great things about the White Knight Chronicles series and the just-released Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, both of which are PS3 exclusives.
