Rebranding a Fan Film: United Federation of Planets

A friend of mine and I once were writing an ST parody and came up with the term "Galactic Union". Even had a line in there about "union dues".
Used in Star Trek Online. :(

More Names:
  • Orion–Cygnus Alliance
  • Interstellar Federal Union of States
Reading over the Wikipedia definition of "Confederation", I don't think names with that word are a good choice unless we're deliberately trying to synchronize with Renegades. Wikipedia describes confederations as a relatively weak form of government compared to federal governments.

That depends on how much power you want with the central government. If you want an affiliation of planetary governments but whose power is retained primarily within the several worlds, then a confederation could work. I've had a similar idea where the central government has delegated very strict and specific powers, with the rest falling to member worlds to police and resolve.

Regardless, I like the first one, as it orients around specific planetary bodies. I would consider finding something that the member worlds have in common and use that for the namesake of the alliance, league, union, republic, etc.

The United Planets Federation!
The United Worlds Federation
The United Federation of Worlds

Instead of the word Federation you could use: Alliance, Coalition, Confederacy, Partnership, or Association

I've added those last two to my spreadsheet containing different two-word name combinations. The column headers are now the following:
  • Alliance
  • Amalgamation
  • Association
  • Coalition
  • Commonwealth
  • Confederation
  • Consortium
  • League
  • Partnership
  • Republic
  • Union
...And here are the row headers:
  • Astral
  • Celestial
  • Cosmic / Intercosmic
  • Galactic
  • Intergalactic (which I don't want to use, see earlier in the thread)
  • Planetary / Interplanetary
  • Sidereal / Intersidereal
  • Space
  • Star
  • Stellar / Interstellar
  • Systems
I've performed Web searches for all "[Row] [Column]" combinations of those words, and nearly all of them are in use as all or part of an existing name or term. Excluding all the "Inter[Row] [Column]" names where "[Row] [Column]" is already in use, here's what was available:
  • Intersidereal Association
  • Intersidereal Consortium
  • Intersidereal Partnership
  • Sidereal Consortium
  • Sidereal Partnership
So, yeah, some real winners. To be honest, I'm not in love with Association/Consortium/Partnership because they can all be the names of companies rather than governments. So now you see why I'm entertaining names like "Orion–Cygnus Alliance".

Federalism already restricts the central government to specific powers. The distinction is that in a confederation, most of the power is in the hands of the member states. Also, there basically isn't a modern confederation with a strong, centrally controlled military (like what you see with Starfleet). A "Confederation" could basically function as a federal government for story purposes, though, depending on what rights the central authority reserves for itself.

So, I'm not automatically against the word "confederation", especially since Renegades is already using it. I just find the term mildly problematic.

I would consider finding something that the member worlds have in common and use that for the namesake of the alliance, league, union, republic, etc.
That would make more sense for an NGO or corporation. Not sure I can think of a real world instance for a , save perhaps the United Soviet Socialist Republics. For instance, the European Union isn't named that way. That said, it does provide more naming flexibility. For something like the Federation, what would that common principle be that is so specific we could incorporate it into a name?

I always liked 'Galactic Alliance' even though its used in some smaller shows like Dark Matter. Also Galactic Coalition or Interstellar Collation .

It doesn't just have to be a common principle but a common place or geography, the place were they signed a treaty, or first encountered each other, etc.

For instance, the Spartan led alliance in the Greek City States was called the "Peloponnesian League" and a later alliance was the "Arcadian League" based upon local geography. Which, interestingly enough, goes back to one of the proposals of "Orion-Cygnus Alliance" which would be based upon local geography of the galaxy.

Let me throw another wrinkle into the mix: Ship prefixes!

Renegade is using CSS, no doubt standing for "Confederation Star Ship". So Galactic Alliance Starship would be...um... Anyway, here are some others:
  • Galactic Coalition Starship (GCS)
  • Interstellar Coalition Starship (ICS)
  • Alliance of Worlds Starship (AWS)
How do you abbreviate Orion-Cygnus Alliance Starship? OAS? OCAS? Orion-Cygnus Alliance Vessel (OCAV/OAV)? Alliance Space Vessel (ASV)? You get the idea.

To be blunt, you don't need to use the "It's "Confederation Star Ship" so it's CSS" prefix at all. Just use whatever prefix you want, and come up with something in-universe to you to justify it.

The "largely powerless central organizing body of a affiliation of completely sovereign powers.

Or the "LPCOBACSP."
the place were they signed a treaty
Like the Camp David Accords, which had nothing to do with the region around Camp David.

So your new nation/state could be called the Pluto Republic, even through Pluto has little more than a a research outpost on it's surface, and the seat of government is located elsewhere

You don't always need spaceship in the title. The nomenclature can be based upon ship class or function, unit affiliation or a shorthand military term.

Alliance Interceptor Vessel (AIV)
Galactic Alliance Patrol (GAP)
Alliance Cruiser Fusion Core (ACFC)
Galactic Alliance-Mars Division (GA-MD)

Probably need to know what to call your military, then. That's a topic for another post, though.

"Mind the GAP! We don't want to fall into the GAP in the middle of our smuggling operation."
