Rebranding a Fan Film Project

my 2 cents

Warp Drive: this term is used in other sci fi. The only thing Star Trek probably can lay claim to is Warp factors. probably best to use hyperspace, hyperdrive, hyper factor, FTL, jump drive, making a jump, or maybe make up a new term.

Impulse Engines : agree that this probably is something Star Trek can claim. Sublight Engines, sublight drive, ion drive, reactor drive, conventional drive, or something like that.

Shields: multiple sci fi franchises use that. ECM (Eelctronic Counter Measures), ECCM, defensive screens, plasma shields, repulsive screens

Phasers: I'd add maybe particle beam, rail gun, ion cannon, pulse cannon, plasma cannon, tactical nukes, DEW (Directed Energy Weapon), electrolaser, pulse weapons, Tesla gun, Laser, MASER (there is such a thing). etc

Photon Torpedoes: Missiles, torpedoes, Proton torpedoes (star wars used it), rockets, bombs,

Tricorder: scanner, spectrometer, or add any prefix besides Tri in front of *corder (IE quad, octo, deca),

Communicator: comlink, transceiver, radio, transmitter, phone

Replicator: I don't think the term replicator is trademarked, but you could substitute duplicator, fabricator, 3D printer,

Nanites/Nanoprobes: Picoprobes, microprobes, femtoprobes, etc.

Cloaking Device: I think cloaking device might be safe, it was used in Star Wars and Stargate, but maybe use invisibility cloak, invisibility screen, stealth screen, stealth mode, metascreen, as alternates.

Holodeck: Star trek didn't make this up. They stole it from Xmen's Danger Room. Why does it have to be a hologram deck? Even the Holodeck isn't just made up of holograms. What about simulator room, simulator deck, sim-deck, etc?

Tractor Beam: Agree that Tractor Beam is generic, but you could say grappling beam, cable beam, tow beam, plasma beam, sonic tractor beam, plasma tractor beam,

Nanites/nanoprobes is generic enough that you wouldn't have to worry. The term 'nanite' was coming forward as a technological term IRL when they first showed up on TNG. Since then they've shown up all over, including Stargate. Stargate used Replicator as well, though they used it for something else. You could use the exact same tech and call it the 'replication device' or some such. No one ever said anyone had to use the same suffixes, i.e. -or, either.

Before the announcement about Star Trek: Discovery, I had thought we needed a nice space opera that felt like Star Trek but was completely new. Take what we like about Star Trek and make a new universe. It can have a Star Trek feel or vibe without treading on the copyrights or dealing with any of Trek's 50 year baggage.

I think David Gerrold accomplished this with his Star Wolf series. I also got a strong Trek vibe from the book Polaris by Sheldon Perkins. This review is not that favorable, but I enjoyed it. http://sfpotpourri.blogspot.com/2012/03/1979-polaris-perkins-sheldon.html
