Rebranding a Fan Film: Deal Breakers

Matthew Raymond

Assuming a fan film has removed (or is free of) any and all materials that could potentially infringe on the copyrights/trademarks/patents of CBS/Paramount, are there any deal breakers that would keep you from watching the fan film? Does it matter if the production is non-profit? Would it matter if merchandise were sold related to the film? What if actors from Star Trek appeared in the film? What if they had money left over and didn't spend it in a way you'd approve of?

What would keep you from watching a rebranded fan film?

Also, are there situations where you would watch the film but you wouldn't contribute to or support it?

The only things that would stop me from watching a rebranded fan film are exactly the same things that would stop me from watching any (sci-fi) film. Bad acting, bad script, bad fx, etc. (Unless they're so bad they become good!)

What would a rebranded film need to do to get you to support it, though? Aside from general quality and technical proficiency, that is.

Have a story that has something to say and not simply be a load of pew pew, and not having a con-man executive producing it.

Bad acting is the biggest deal breaker for me, and my threshold for that is actually pretty low, given how many high school drama plays I participated in. However, for me, the characters are more important, as they need to make sense in their context and setting.
